Default What are your first thoughts when you think about the movie studios and BD?

When a movie is announced for BD release, the first thing I focus is the actual movie (do I like the movie or not). Next, I determine which studio is releasing the BD. The combination of the movie and the studio releasing the BD help determine if I will purchase the movie or not. There are some studios that consistently release quality BD’s (title after title) and then there are some studios that mostly disappoint. After two years of purchasing Blu-ray movies, I’ve formed some opinions about the studios and the titles they release. The following are what comes to mind with respect to the big studios. What are your thoughts?

Sony: Great quality BD’s (PQ/SQ), not always the best movie selection in catalog, expensive.

Paramount/DreamWorks: Excellent BD’s (PQ/SQ), great movies in catalog, expensive.

Universal: Starting to produce top tier BD’s (PQ/SQ), excellent movies in catalog, reasonably priced catalog titles, expensive new releases.

Fox: Mostly excellent BD’s (PQ/SQ), both new releases and catalog releases are expensive.

Disney: Best quality BD’s (PQ/SQ), excellent movies catalog, reasonable prices.

Lionsgate: Usually well made BD’s (PQ/SQ), limited movie selection.

New Line: DNR, DNR, DNR!!!

Warner: Worst overall BD’s (PQ/SQ), excellent movie selection in catalog, ok pricing.

Sony: too expensive

Paramount/DreamWorks: too expensive

Universal: too expensive

Fox: too expensive

Disney: too expensive

Lionsgate: too expensive

New Line: too expensive

Warner: too expensive

In all seriousness, I'd say Disney has the best BDs, in terms of the PQ of the actual movie, but also all the other extras they include. Warner needs to get their act together and release Pee-Wee's Big Adventure asap.

Warner isn't that bad if you don't have a HD Audio system. I only have a nice TV no stereo and the PQ isn't bad. I have several WB BD's as you can see in my collection.

I have no complaints about anything. Not picture, not audio, not prices, not extras. Yet, anyway. I'm perfectly content. With everything, so far, honestly.

Paramount - If their video, laserdisc and DVD catalogue was any indictation, I sense a lot of terrible releases in their future, followed by lame double-dips.

You're right. I don't know how to shop because I still think $25 for a movie is too much (even if I was slightly joking).

I actually know of a place where I can get BDs for $13, which is where I've gotten nearly all of my movies. But what I was referring to is that the MSRP is ridiculous and most stores stick to that (Blockbuster, FYE, etc selling movies for $35-40) and that isn't helping BD catch on.

Sony- Quality is always good but I wish they had better catalogue titles available.

Universal - Top-notch quality and are releasing some great titles.

Paramount - Quality is okay, some are excellent, some are disappointing

Fox - Expensive, lack of any extras but at least they bring out decent titles

Disney / Buena Vista - Quality is excellent but charging extra for digital copies sucks and I wish they would bring out more titles.

WB / New Line - New Releases are great however lots are missing HD audio plus catalogue quality isn't very good plus they are holding out on key titles that we all want. (Example: Batman and Blade)

Lionsgate - Quality is solid especially N / R however catalogue selection is poor.

i can't say anything about blockbuster, as i don't shop there. f.y.e. though usually always has sales and never sticks to the msrp. in a lot of cases it's cheaper than anywhere else or about even. hell, f.y.e. was selling fight the future whereas best buy wasn't even selling it. nor was target.
