Default The "Do you still buy DVDs?" Megathread

I'm guessing most Blu-ray supporters want to buy their films on Blu-ray but do you still buy DVDs? Will you continue buying them in the future or will you wait for the Blu-ray version?

I was considering buying Rambo First Blood on Blu-ray but after reading reviews about the transfer not being so great and the fact that it's an old film anyway and not really high quality as the new films are, I'm wondering if I should buy the trilogy on DVD which is cheaper than the single film on Blu.

Do you think that they will release the set on Blu after the release of Rambo 4?

Mike

I never buy DVD's, and yes I think they will release a Rambo boxset on Blu ray after 4 comes out for sure.

The last DVD I bought came with a CD and was concert footage. I could see maybe getting music videos on DVD if you don't think they are coming to Blu Ray. Many older concerts were filmed with standard def video cameras anyway.

Old TV shows like the Avengers from 65 and such may also just do best on DVD.

But,.. No,.. I don't buy DVD's anymore. Blu Rays cost about the same (if you seek sales and bargains and such) and there are so many Blu Rays now I have no problem finding stuff I want.

I don't want to buy anymore DVDs, but I really want "The King of Kong" and I have no idea how long it will be before it's on BD.

You're right. The only DVD's I may entertain buying going forward would be concert videos as well. That's about it.

Mike,

I own First Blood, and while it might not be a movie you want to use to show off your Blu-ray player, the film still looks great, especially for its age. Im probably done buying DVDs, and will start working on replacing the movies I have on DVD, for its Blu-ray counterpart.

I will buy neither. Obviously I can't go back to DVD. But neither I will invest in software for a transitional format like Blu-Ray. (I'm a Blu-Ray renter.)

After seeing how my wife and daughter took to our Comcast DVR Tuner box, I'm convinced HD VOD will be the primary delivery system, for movies, a few years down the road. All my years of trying to teach them how to program a VCR and our DVD recorder were complete failures. Now I watch in amazement at how proficient they are at using this technology.

My only concern is whether Verizon Fios and their other VOD competitors will screw with OAR's of films to appease the foolscreen people.

I did buy some Universal and Paramount DVDs.. but no more since the switch.

Rambo II and III are coming May 27th. Rambo 4 will most likely also release on that date.

John... while I understand your point, I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you. I (and I think a LOT of people on this forum) would much rather have a physical copy of a movie. Downloading movies via VOD and such is a great way to "rent" a movie, but if you're a collector, there's something about picking up the movie in it's tangible format and knowing that movie is "safe"... I would NEVER want to have a downloaded "collection" unless there was an entire backup system... even then, physical media is my preference. No disrespect to your thought process.

i only rent DVDs now,...

basically renting them between my blu-ray purchases (when i am low on funds).

this gives me chance to view movies that are not on blu-ray yet, also,.. if i am on the fence on buying a movie, i rent the DVD before spending full whack on a blu-ray purchase.

Now I didn't say I was happy with HD VOD being the next big thing. IMO Blu-Ray is the superior technology. I was just trying to say the writings on the wall. In the grand scheme of things Blu-Ray is going to have the same impact as Laser Disc.

I still go for DVD's if the blu transfer is under par. Otherwise, I've got to watch it on Blu.

I have already begun this. I will only buy blu, and only still have my DVDs cause their counterparts aren't out yet
