WoW!!!

Japan Yen 900.00 JPY = 7.58777 USD United States Dollars

1 JPY = 0.00843086 USD 1 USD = 118.612 JPY

These blu-laser diodes are going for $7.58.

Capable of producing 5 million blue-violet laser diodes (BD playback-only equivalent) per month.

For some reason, I don't envision Sony selling too many of these to Toshiba et al.

Well, the cost of the PS3 has just been reduced then.

The BD drive should cost not more than $30 to produce now, along with a 65nm Cell/RSX that should bring the cost of production into a much more manageable range.

I would hazard a guess at $500 for total cost of the PS3 once these BV laser diodes and 65nm comes online.

Which could mean a price-cut for us to around $400, that would be something worth talking about.

I disagree... I don't think Sony will be so quick to lower the price as long as they are still subsidising a good portion of the cost.

I think the lower diode cost will result in maybe a SMALL reduction in price, but a much larger reduction in Sony's loss per item shipped

Just my $.02

yes i agree with your ice man i think sony wont drop the ps3 by too 400 dollars untill they can break even so that would mean a ps3 costing around 360$ to produce(funny after i took in acount of retailers grain plus shipping i got 360 [x box 360 funny lol)

I'm not expecting any price cut this year. However, I do feel like that this year's Christmas season may reveal some form of official price reduction.

But I still expect that the bigger price cuts won't start till like next year.

I'd love to see the 60 gig PS3 drop to about $499 for this forthcoming holiday season and maybe they bring out a 120 gig PS3 at $599 if they felt like it.
