Big Changes Ahead, Please Pardon Our Dust

by Kevin Carmony

April 25th, 2007

These past several months have been a time of great transition for Linspire. As most of you know, we have announced several significant changes, and most of these will come to life in the next 60 days, including an entirely new CNR system and new versions of both Freespire and Linspire. This is an extremely exciting time for Linspire, and one that has required some patience on all of our parts as we've made such significant changes to our infrastructure and baseline products. But, after much hard work making, kneading, and baking the bread, it's about to come out of the oven for all of us to enjoy!

Freespire OS

The new Freespire 2.0 operating system starts with Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) for its baseline, and then integrates the latest KDE, the new CNR, and the latest 3rd-party proprietary software, drivers and codecs for better hardware and multimedia support. Freespire also includes dozens of other changes to make Freespire easier to use. This new OS will be the most current and advanced desktop Linux operating system available anywhere. It will have been well worth the wait, and the infrastructure will be in place to keep Freespire current on a more timely basis moving forward. (To learn more about the new Ubuntu-based Freespire, read this Linspire Letter and review this chart.)

Freespire OS Timeline:

*
Presently - Freespire 2.0 Alpha - Freespire 2.0 is currently in Alpha testing.
*
Early May - Freespire 2.0 Beta - The new CNR plug-in and a new network control panel will be added to Freespire and move to Beta testing.
*
Early June - Freespire 2.0 Final - This release will coincide with the final launch of the new CNR.com site.

since the playstation 3 supports ubuntu ff.. this could be fun..
