Default Connection Problem

Sorry if this has been posted, so on and so forth...

I'm setting up my PS3 and it won't connect to the internet. I went out and got an ethernet cable. I connected it from the PS3 to my cable modem with no luck. Then I connected it to where the modem connects to the CPU, no luck. I'm getting pissed off. I know it's probably something simple I'm just not doing, just don't know what. Please help before I break something.

I don't have a PS3, but every time I have trouble logging in on something it usually has something to do with the I.P. address. I would check that.

if u are connecting it directly to the cable modem you may need to call your cable company and tell them the MAC address of your ps3. Most people have a router, you register the routers MAC address with the cable company, then you can plug whatever u want into the router without having to register it.

Well there's the place in Network Settings where it asks about IP address. I just clicked Automatic, figured that should work. Of course, I was wrong. Not sure how to find the IP address either.

Check and see if there is a place on the ps3 where you can put in your e-mail address if there is put it in and it should give it to you. If not then it should run off the same I.P. address as your computer don't know where to find on computer though.

automatic should be correct. your cable company will automatically assign you an ip address, like i said before you may need to register your ps3, you can find the mac address under settings -> system settings-> system information "MAC Address". Call them and tell them exactly what you did, bought a ps3, want to connect it to the internet.

Success. After being to hell and back TWICE, I now have a PS3 and computer working simultaneously through a router. Thanks for the help guys! Be prepared to see my name again when it's time to hook up the HDTV and everything else.
