The highest my T.v runs is 1080i, i got a blu ray player for xmas, i'm catching all sorts of flack from one of my friends saying that i might as well jsut be watching sddvd's .. am i really getting that bad of performance from this.. it's a 42inch and i sit anywhere from 5-15 feet away depending where i sit.. I've also been told it will look better if i jsut go to 720p, any insight?

I dont know much about the technical specs because im not too well versed on it. You will get a log of jargon about how the picture is sent to the tv and yada yada yada, but what I do know is I have a 1080i 52 incher sony and a 1080p sony 52 incher and I watch blurays on both and cant tell the difference and they both look great! So dont get discouraged. I dont think your missing out on anything really. Because I got the 1080p jargon too I went and got a 1080p which is one of my tvs and to this day I still dont get it. Just enjoy your 1080i.

Sounds like your friend is just a 1080p snob. Don't worry about it and enjoy your Blu-ray movies.

I'm running 1080i into a 31" Loewe Planus via HDMI into the RGB. Bloody awesome and better than almost every panel I've seen running 1080p in the chain stores - which isn't really hard to do since they rarely tweak their panels I suppose.

Uh.. BD's on a 720p or 1080i look amazing. You're getting around 95% HD visuals.. which is worth not paying the extra $500-1,000 for.

Ive got a 5 year old Philips 42' 1080i set, I had this discusion a while back regarding 1080i and 720p and trust me there is not much difference at all.Grab ya self a heavy duty sound system and all will be fine! I think to many forums go on about this.............its BD, ITS HD........ENJOY IT!!!!

I have a 3 year old Samsung Rear Projection HDTV running 1080i and I love it. I think the average person can't really make out the difference.

Your TV accepts 1080i, but does not display it. Your set will probably display a picture in a format like 1024 x 768 pixels (or 720p). Blu-ray will look 10x better than DVD (upconverted or not) on your display. Don't let your obviously clueless friends discourage you. As for 1080i vs 720p input signal, you'll have to try both for yourself and see which one looks best to you.

I'm going to join the masses of torch-wielding townspeople, and also say that your friend doesn't know what he's talking about.

Personally I prefer to set the output at 1080i as opposed to 720p but that's your call....

I have three displays running 1080i and I've seen my fair share of 1080p and I won't say that on average it's not better, but there is more to a picture than just lines of resolution..... But I won't go down that road right now!!!!!!

Anyways, watch your t.v. and enjoy it.... I'm guessing your friend doesn't have a blu-ray player huh?????????? No need to go out and try to rub it in his face, but I wouldn't really care much about his opinion in regards to audio/video at this point, because he's clearly clueless in that regard.

Your friend's clueless. Even on an SDTV with 480i your viewing experience will be more pleasurable and accurate with Blu-ray.

More efficient codecs, far superior sound and much slicker menus all combine for a better experience. Suggesting you might as well watch DVD is 100% ignorance.

1080i is double the resolution of 720p
1080i and 1080p are the SAME RESOLUTION

...but unless you've got an HD CRT or a Hitachi interlaced plasma you're better off looking at whether or not your TV passes deinterlacing tests. If it does set your BD player to 1080i, if not set it to 720p.

That's crazy. I also have a 1080i only TV, bought it when plasmas and lcds were still 7K or so. Just bought a panasonic 55 and it looks great! Much better than DVD.
