if your buying now, get 1080p. progressive is better than interlaced. i bought a long time ago so my tv only get 1080i. i have no complaints and love the pic

I may be wrong but I would have said that with a 1080i 37" set it's likely to be an older model, and although the picture may look perfectly acceptable the rest of the supporting architecture may also be older as well leading to inferior results elsewhere, say in the settings, the audio production, provision of other gimmicks (e.g. a newer TV may have more HDMI inputs or a USB port for photo viewing).

I know they're not necessarily essentials but if the upgrade to a more recent model with 1080p isn't a huge amount I'd spend the extra and get the 1080p set.

On a 37 inch t.v. you wouldn't really tell the difference between 720p or 1080i.
If you end up going for a smaller t.v. again 36-40 inch or lower it won't really make a difference between 720p or 1080p. It also depends on how far the t.v. is placed from you.
The big question is do you have the budget to purchase a new larger t.v.?
Or can you hold off and wait to see what the price drop for the holidays will be, and one must not forget the introduction of 3-d televisions next year, which could drop prices even lower on LCD's and Plasma's.

I have a 34" widescreen Sony XBR that's 1080i, Blu-Ray looks terrific - even more so because tube TVs STILL give the best picture. The downside obviously is size - and yes you will see more detail on a larger screen. Any larger screen you buy now will likely be 1080p.

So your decision comes down to are you happy with your current TV? If so, then get a Blu-Ray player and enjoy. If not, then upgrade, get a Blu-Ray player and enjoy

Unless, of course, the source signal is a computer (not playing a movie, of course). 1080i is pretty useless for anything that involves text, such as web browsing.
