What makes this story BS? Here, direct from the article: "For all that innovation in the PS3, one thing didn't change: the controller, that handheld mess of buttons so confusing to non-gamers. Sure, Kuturagi made it work wirelessly, which has no doubt saved the world from a few broken ankles and smashed glasses, but the controller itself looks identical to the one found on the PS2. Why change something that is already installed in 200 million homes worldwide? Answer: because there are more people in those homes that don't play games, and hundreds of millions more homes to win over. Nintendo's answer to Ken Kuturagi -- Mario Bros. creator and games world legend Shigeru Miyamoto -- knew this better than most. That's why he designed a revolutionary controller that is sensitive to motion, not button-mashing. Everyone knows how to swing a golf club or a boxing glove in a Wii game. You just swing the controller.... ...The Wii may not be the most powerful console ever built, but it is the smallest and lightest. Its chip is not faster than Sony's cell, but it does use less electricity. In short, it looks more like the future. " First, the PS2 controller was widely considered the best ever. So yes, why change it? Second, for the last paragraph, they forget that the PS3 controller is motion-sensitive, as well. Also, having the wiimote makes it more revolutionary than the Blu-ray drive, Cell processor, and a motion-sensitive controller? I just don't get how this author came to those conclusions. I'm not challenging the Wii's success. Its price point is very friendly, helping win over people who don't play video games. But the PS3 is just so different from it; it wins over home theater enthusiasts. Who here bought a PS3 because it was the cheapest blu-ray player and have or will be getting at least one game for it? |

A rather silly write-up indeed. Makes you wonder if these people even know the subject they are writing about... I bet he still uses a PS2 and Xbox and doesn't even know what the PS3 and 360 look like.

Yeah, its such as mess or buttons. They should have made it like the controller of the two preceeding winners of their respective generations.....oh wait they did. Well, they should have made it like the 360s......oh wait all thats different is they switched up the d-pad with a stick. well they should have made it innovative and motion sensing.....oh wait they did.
I know that if they would have just changed that controller, this thing would be a success. Man! How could they be soooo stupid! I mean only 200 million people bought the PS1 and PS2. There are 6 billion people in the world. You know what that means 5.8 billion people in the world did not buy PS1 or PS2 because they were very, very confused about the controller and the same is with PS3. And I mean lets talk about the future here. Small and weak is the way to go. Hell, I saw this little cheapo laptop at walmart yesterday. Thing ran at 577Mhz. I was like Dude! thats the future. Its small and weak!!!!! Off topic: HOw do you get it so you can type in your BDs, PS3 games, and TV setup underneath all your comments. |

I think everyone needs to read the whole article before posting a comment.
My girlfriend is a non-gamer and she said the same thing. There are to many buttons on the PS2/3 controller and Xbox/Xbox 360 controllers as well. The Wii controller is simpler to use compare to the PS2/3, Xbox, Xbox 360 controllers, so I can understand why he said this. I also think the “In short, it looks more like the future.” I believe this was directed towards this whole part of the article. Nintendo took a different tack. When you buy a videogame console, the company says, you want to play games. Period. A console is not a Swiss Army knife. It makes sense to squeeze more functionality into your cell phone because you carry that device around everywhere. When it comes to the interactive fun box in your living room, however, it makes sense to simply make that more fun. If you want a DVD player, you'll buy a DVD player. The Wii may not be the most powerful console ever built, but it is the smallest and lightest. Its chip is not faster than Sony's cell, but it does use less electricity. In short, it looks more like the future I tend to agree with this. I buy a videogame console to play games, everything else is an added bonus. The PS3 on the other hand, I bought because at the time it was the cheapest and best blu-ray player out there. Being able to play video games on it was the added bonus for me. If the PS3 did not play Blu-ray movies, with its current selection games I would have waited to buy the PS3 down the road when more games I’m interested in playing come out. It looks more like the future statement I believe he was saying that the future of video games console is for it to be only a game console, like the Wii. Not something that will run your entire house, although that would be cool. |

I'm fine with the Wii doing that, but I prefer the PS3's approach of having the integrated BD player, because that's one less component for me to buy. And the whole part of the slower processor looking more like the future is a comment I believe is complete crap. If the processors don't get faster, then how can games be made more revolutionary. The same goes w/ the discs used. If higher-capacity discs aren't used, we'll reach a threshold capacity, and then only multiple discs will be able to be used for games. I really disagreed w/ the "future" part of his story. Other than the wiimote, which I do think is very cool, the Wii is a throwback to me. This isn't all bad, as I still think back to the good ole' days when you spent $200 for the system, two controllers, and a game. With the NES you got two games! But I think that the only part of the Wii that's the future is the motion-sensing. Last edited by nhaase; 04-30-2007 at 05:41 PM. |

Nintendo didn't go for a niche market - they went for the family and friends market. They went for the everyday joe6pack and his wife and two kids. They focused on making games fun and more interactive. PS3 and Xbox360 however focus on the hardcore gamers that want high powered graphics and games you immerse yourself in. This is actually a smaller market than the Wii's, but you have a higher volume of games per buyer.
IMO Nintendo's done a stroke of genius in that they're no longer competing with Sony and Microsoft and have left them to compete with each other instead. I can easily see a gamer buying a Wii in addition to a PS3 or 360 simply due to price, but you'll have more of a division in PS3 vs 360. |

I simply agree with the statement about non-games liking the Wii, better because the controller is easier to learn how to use, for Non-gamers. I said it before, my girlfriend is a non-gamer. She said that the PS2/3, Xbox 360 controllers have too many buttons and she will not take the time to learn them all just to play a game. I'm sure there are a lot of non-gamers that feel this way. The Wii controller is simple and doesn't take as much time to learn, so for non-gamers these games are fun. 95% of the people on here will disagree with this, because we are casual or hardcore gamers. Quote:
Wii playing Wii, game cube, and N64 games is still a Video game system playing video games. Better example of using this statement against Nintendo’s Wii not being only a video game system, is to talk about it's channel options. Forecast Channel is about weather information, everything in the News Channel that doesn't deal with Video games, Photo channel, Everything in the Everybody Vetoes channel that doesn't deal with video games, & the Internet Channel. All of these features really have nothing to do with Wii being only a Video Game system. |
