Default Would you upgrade?

I currently have a yamaha HTR-5960
http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/p...l?CNTID=200502

The only thing is is missing is HDMI pass-thru and/or upconvert and it does not support any HD audio

Currently I run the video from my devices directly into the TV via HDMI, and the audio is input into the AVR via Optical.

If you've got the cash, yeah, the upgrade to HD audio is worth it.

lol. It is always about the $$$

I see that the average reciever with HDMI is around $500

It would hurt alot, esspecially that I paid that much if not more for this reciever many years ago. You think there might be some resell value in this reciever?

Probably not a whole lot. I believe there are some good Onkyo receivers still available in the 3-400 range, depending on where you shop.

There is no need to upgrade depending on your player.

Which player do you have?

If you have one with analog outs (Sony 550/Panny 55/Samsung 2500) you can connect it via analog cables and get HD audio.

I read that post about the players. I have the PS3 right now and alas It wont work for that option. I may just sell the PS3 and look for a stand alone BD player.

Great, but I am confused...I have a Sony BDP-S550 and an Onkyo (TRX-701) about 4 years old, which is without the HDMI setup.
The onboard decoding and 7.1 analog output on the Sony is great, but my receiver only has a 5.1 analog input (it does have 7.1 output to the speakers).
So while I can send surround sound to my 7 speakers, I can only connect 5 analog cables from the Sony 550 to the Onkyo.

Any suggestions?
