I currently have an 3 year old Panasonic SA-HT900 5 disc 5.1 system. There 1 large plug which plugs into the sub from the main unit. The rest of the speakers plug into the sub.
I use my Ps3 as my blu ray player. I have the HDMi from the PS3 into my 50' plasma and optical cable plugged into the Panasonic. I recently discovered that the panasonic wont decode blu rayDTS through the optical in. It decodes DTS from a DVD fine but wont through the optical. There is no other digital inputs at the back of the unit only left/right aux etc. I want to retain the other speakers in the system as they are fairly good and i have them already setup. Whats the easiest way to upgrade my system with a HDMI 5.1 / 7.1 reciever? Will i need to get a new sub also as it seems to be paired with the unit? |

I was looking at the onkyo 605.
Would this be 2 powerful for the stock speakers? |

The receiver in those Home Theater In a Box system is matched with the speakers in the box. If you look at the Ohm rating on the back of those speakers, I bet it is far less than 8 Ohms. Standard speakers are run on 8 Ohms. Most companies cut the impedance on those systems to give you the illusion of more power, the receiver and the speakers are both matched to this. Also from time to time, the manufacturer will put funky proprietary ends on either the wire or receiver, not that you can't cut them off, but it's a pain.
Your best bet is start from scratch, build a system, because if you use what you have 1 of 2 things will happen. Using the current speakers and replacing the receiver will either cause you to toast the speakers, or damage the new receiver because of the impedance. The same thing can potentially happen if you change the speakers as well. I'd just use what you have for now, and change everything at the same time. I hope this helps. |
