Are blue ray writer drives backward compatible?

Are the capable of writing DVD RW media or DVD DL RW discs?

Thanks for your help!

Yes, they are. You can burn any type of CD or DVD media in them just fine.

I've also had good luck reading media that had problems in other drives - scratched disks, etc. They are very precise.

I am no expert on this but the OP mentioned DL discs, I wouldn't think that every blu-ray burner can do dual layer writing on a DVD. I think otherwise you are probably correct but if I were buying a Blu-ray burner I would want to see it in writing that it supported writing to CD and DVD, etc. since I think it requires a different laser than the Blu-ray laser. Red vs Blu not just for politics anymore.
