First off, I know HTiB's suck for the most part, but I am very cheap and want to get one for CHEAP! Before anyone suggests Onkyo 606 (I would get it, trust me), or anything, I live in Canada so it is HARD to come by for cheap.
My question is, can I get HD audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD, etc.), from a sh*t receiver, like one from a HTiB, since the PS3 already decodes it (as I have learned), and sends it as PCM signal. Am I right in saying the PS3 decodes it? My options for HTiB were boxing day sales like, this, this. If these suck TOO much, can anyone suggest a good receiver, and speaker set-up, that can be had for cheap in CANADA. Also, if I were to splurge and find one of these, tomorrow, should I jump on it? Because I am sure I could find a good Polk set of speakers for $200-300. |

Those definitely suck and won't do what you want. Get the Pioneer receiver. Its a great receiver and it will do exactly what you want and that's a great price too. If you can get it go for it and the Polk speakers....a much better investment than those Samsung HTIB's. I understand the want to be cheap in this economy, but trust me when I tell you that those particular HTIB's are complete junk. There are some good ones out there, but when you can go separate at the prices you can get the Pioneer receiver and Polk speakers for it doesn't even make sense to consider them since they will be inferior still. Oh yeah, and the PS3 does decode the sound and sends it as uncompressed audio to the receiver.

I figured as much. But is it possible to get HD sound of them, I am curious to know if they can even accept the feed the PS3 will give them, the PCM lossless audio one.

No matters, I bought the Pioneer Receiver. Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD decode, 3 HDMI input/output (I believe). $400 on boxing day, so now I need to find some good speakers...and a place to put this thing, holy fack is it big. I want to put it under my tv, but I don't think there is enough room!!

You did the right thing. That Onkyo suggested is good for what it does, but it doesn't pass audio over HDMI so it wouldn't work for you anyway since you are using a PS3. The Sony HTIB's suggested I'm sure are good for what they are, but you would still pay what you just paid for the Pioneer receiver which is a much better investment. Get you some good speakers and you definitely won't regret your purchase. Enjoy!

Thanks for the input. I am checking monoprice right now to get some cables (a few HDMI). Never realized the receiver was going to be 36 bloody pounds, it was a monster carrying it around the store!

Good receivers are always heavy. Its always a sign of quality when it comes to receivers. That's why I always find it funny when the specs of an HTIB receiver says it puts out 1000watts and it weights like 10lbs. You definitely get what you pay for, and personally I don't like paying for distortion which is what a crappy receiver will give you. I'm sure you're going to love that receiver.

my janky HTIB just broke down =/ this looks like a solid replacement. i'm trying to decide between getting a solid receiver (i live in canada fwiw) and slowly upgrading.
my only problem, i live in an apartment building and the walls are paper thin. i won't live here forever, at the same time i'm far from owning a house, etc so it's not like i need to rattle the windows for my next system. decisions decisions.... |
