Okay, one of my PS3s will power on, the icons on the XMB are fine, but any of the sub icons, game demos, user ids etc just show up as the rotating arrows and they never go away. If I stick in a blu-ray disc, nothing happens. If I click on one of the rotating icons, the whole thing locks up. Any ideas what could be wrong? This one is not hooked up to the internet at the moment. I was thinking it may be the hard drive or something since it looks like it is unable to load any of the information.

Do you think that will work? As to the other post, I don't think I can back it up because it will freeze up when I click on anything. And how can it be formatted if I can't click on anything. I could remove it, but could I stick it in my notebook to format it?

I fixed this myself. I did contact Sony, but from the info they sent me, it looked like I was going to have to send it in to get it fixed. It cost me nothing but a little time. I took the Hard Drive out of the non working PS3 and one that works, (yes, I have 3 don't ask). I switched them out, that took a little while as the PS3s have different Hard Drive carriers so I had to remove those and switch them out. I stuck the working Hard Drive into the PS3 that wasn't working and booted it up. It made me reformat the drive. I ended up losing everything saved on it, but I didn't really mind. It worked in that PS3, so I took the drive, swapped them out again. Wouldn't you know, it didn't want to work. Well, it told me I needed to have a removable storage device with the most current firmware on it. I grabbed a thumb drive and got on the net and downloaded it. I hooked up the thumb drive and followed the instructions. Works fine now. I don't know how it ended up with the error it had since it is one that the kids use all the time, so it could have been anything.
So, the formatting the drive trick worked, but as I said in my previous posts, I could not click on anything so I could not format the drive from the original PS3 itself. |

Disconnect all USB devices and anything else you can unplug from it besides the video cable and power. It's a long shot, but it could be a bad USB device interfering with the system.
It's more likely a failed hard drive though. Just reseating the hard drive might fix it. |
