Arrow Intel 2011 CPU Lineup

Quote:
Back in August, a report with details sourced from ComputerBase.de was bang-on in tabling what the 2011 Intel Core processor lineup is going to look like. With a little over a month to go for the market release of these processors, fresh details emerged that reveal pricing and precise availability dates of each model. To begin with, 9th January is D-day for the socket LGA1155 platform, when one can expect a large wave of motherboards to reach stores, along with 10 new Core i5, Core i7 "Sandy Bridge" quad-core processors.

The quad-core lineup consists of 7 Core i5 models. Based on a Sandy Bridge derivative silicon, these processors differ from the Core i7 models in having no HyperThreading (4 cores/4 threads), and 25% of the L3 cache being disabled (set at 6 MB). The lineup overall is seeing a clock speed increase compared to current-generation "Lynnfield" processors. The Core i5 lineup also includes an overclocker-friendly "K" model, which features an unlocked BClk multipler. The fastest in the lineup is the Core i7 2600/2600K, which is clocked at 3.40 GHz. With the default BClk (base clock) of Sandy Bridge running at 100 MHz (compared to 133 MHz on Nehalem/Westmere), one can expect very high multiplier values. It should also be easier to calculate speeds and keep track of, for overclockers.

The pricing of these quad-core chips also seems to be very interesting. Things are pretty tight between the Core i5-2300 (2.80 GHz), and Core i5-2500K (3.30 GHz), with just a $39 gap between the two, but four models in all to choose from. The Core i7 parts are priced higher, at $297 for the i7-2600 and $317 for the i7-2600K.

The next big launch day is on 20th February, when Intel launches four dual-core processors in the Core i3 series. Quite interestingly, there are no dual-core Core i5 processors, and most of the Core i3 dual-core chips don't feature Turbo Boost technology, barring the fastest one, the Core i3-2390T. Then, a little later in February, the first LGA1155 Pentium Dual-Core processor, the G620T, will be launched. Some time later in Q2-2011, Intel will add three more Pentium models.

Obviously it's only a partial list, as the "extremeeee editions" aren't listed.

No one told you? In that case, I should inform you that Intel's changing the pin count on their CPUs for 2011.

This was revealed a few months back; everyone was just waiting for the specs.

I take it you're unfamiliar with Intel's track record when it comes to CPU revisions? It's one of the reasons why many PC enthusiasts and overclockers stick with AMD, i.e. they don't pull this stunt every few months with their product lines.

Well this just makes the i7-950 even that much more enticing, so not only is it looking to drop in price yet again in January but the tech has upgrades IE the i7-980X

Keep in mind socket 1155 is midrange and is replacing socket 1156.

Socket 1366 the current high end will not be replaced supposdly LATE 2011 or 2012.

Hopefully picking up an I7 970 in the near future myself

Every few months? socket 1366 (and 1156)came out in 2008. so if its 2011 for its replacement thats 3 years, which isnt that bad.

Ok. That i7 970 is pretty expensive, it's priced $880 at Amazon right now. I made up my mind on getting the i7 950 for when I build my own PC and it's cheap, priced at $280 right now. But there must be a reason for that lol, what's the difference?

http://www.newegg.com/Store/SpecialPromotion.aspx http://www.superbiiz.com and http://www.microcenter.com (<-- I have a few local stores by me) are all well-known hardware places. Superbiiz packages items better than newegg does. Not sure if any of them ship overseas though. You can also try Amazon.

biggest difference is 6cores vs 4 cores

I can get the 970 on a deal through work for $215 though

That's a steal! But is there that much of a difference in performance?

Not really in games but if you do anything video encoding its noticable

also its 32nm vs 45nm for the other i7 chips so it actually consumes less power and for me 1 other bonus is that it should overclock better. im hoping to hit 5GHz with it

The Nehalem (Core-i5) CPUs that utilized the LGA 1156 socket were released on September 8, 2009. Seeing as Intel is making the transition to LGA 1155 next year, this makes the 1156 one of the shortest-lived sockets in recent memory.

Thats still 15months and its the midrange socket, 1366 will have been out for quite a while by the time its released.

Why i make the point about it being a midrange socket u might ask. When they were both comming out people stated even then get the 1366 if you want the most longevity out of it and turns out they were right. Also generally people who are on the midrange do so because they are either A: on a budget, or B: dont use the computer enough to get the highend stuff, neither of which are people who should be looking to upgrade very often.

Yeah, I do some of that sometimes. I'll keep an eye on the price and see if Microcenter has it cheaper any time soon.

That's cool! I've never overclocked before, how do you learn how to do that? I know the basic idea is to raise the frequency and voltage for stability while still maintaining the temprature....or at least that's what I think it is lol, but what if you fry something and can't un-do what you did? Do you get a warning or some kind of safety measure when things get out of control?

Sorry for asking all these questions by the way, I'm just into this stuff.
