Default Do you want better sound?

I read so many threads with people wanting to upgrade speakers, receivers and so on, when in fact they could greatly improve their sound by treating the room and better placement of their gear. I am about to undergo a complete acoustic treatment in my room and will post pics when I'm done, but if you really want to improve the sound in you HT look at some other options other than upgrades, you might be surprised how good your gear can really sound, and there are many ways to do this for under $100.

There are many threads on blu-ray, one that i like in particular is https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=61681

and one of the most interesting video is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbLVjHfHahg pay very close attention in this video to the seating chart, it's very important to have your sofa 38% of the distance to either the front wall or the back wall, i did not know about this tip and applied it tonight and i can say the bass in the system came to life i am now in a sweet spot and not the dead zone, i have been installing systems for 10 years and never new of this, it took an audio engineer who understands everything there is about sound waves and the way the travel to explain this little tip to me.

I have known about Eathan Winer for a very long time and is a genius when it comes to sound, you can build panels similar to his for a fraction of the cost it just might take some time and research to get the right materials.

Well the project will start today i just have to get to the hardware store and pick up the materials for the big project, i am planning on building 12 to 15 acoustic panels ranging in sizes from 2' by 4' and some smaller ceiling panels for the corners.

Will update as soon as I'm done

Good luck! Room treatment will definitely be something I get around to doing once I graduate and have my own place. I look forward to hearing how it all goes!

I look forward to your results. This has been something I have pondered about since I got my new speakers and subs. My room is a funny shape, but I'm sure I can get some valuable pointers from what you come back with. Good luck!

What want to do is something similar to what Robinandtami has done, but instead, on my ceiling - acoustical ceiling tiles, wrapped in black fabric, mounted on the ceiling. But, I want to hear about your experience, as well!

Nice work there Twitch9! Are the frames 1x2's? What kind of fibre fill did you use? And most importantly...what's the total cost? LOL!

John
The frames ar 1x3 MDF and the fiber fill is safe and sound Roxul, This product is safer it don't use fiberglass.

Total cost for everything was $85 cdn and i made

2 2'x4' panels
4 16"x4' panels

still have lots of fabric and fill for some more, i am still planning on making about 4 or 6 more smaller corner ones for the ceiling.

I added some simple foam panels...... not much to look at, and I'm still in the "Tweaking" phase..... but the treble has noticeably improved..... I think mainly due to better separation from the bass (since the bass is now more manageable rather than bouncing around the room)

My room wasn't one giant echo before...... but now that I have room treatments..... I think there was more reflection than I had thought.....

Still tweaking though

Looks good man!! I'll be checkin back to see how it all worked out! I'm sure there will be an improvement - for me I just kind of placed them and worked around my rears and it actually helped quite a bit.

I just raised my center speaker 4 inches yesterday and put more treatments behind that and my front speakers but Eathan Winer says that is not necessary. I'll see if it makes a difference - I haven't listened to anything since I put them up.

Very nice and simple DIY man good job!!

Here is the start of the install, i've treated the back wall but still have a lot of side walls to do.

Thanks for the good feedback, i'll post more when i actually get to sit down and listen to the difference.

Maybe I'm in the wrong place here, but I just want to say that I'd never add all those various foam panels, etc to my home unless it was strictly a home theater room that was dark all the time so I wouldn't have to look at odd bits of foam and panels placed around the room. But in my living room? I'll be happy with what I have. Basic proper placement aside, I view the rest of this stuff as just very fine tuning. That's a lot to look out for what may be only a small listening gain.

To those that are into this sort of thing, is it a real difference or just a perceived difference? I mean, can you actually measure the sound before and after with noticeable results?

The sound is way different and to me it's no difference than hanging pictures or other stuff on the walls, IMO if the panels are done correctly they can actually look pleasing to the eye. It's really a person preference but to me sound is almost more important than looks, i'll be posting pictures of the finished room and i think you will be surprised how good it looks when everything is done.

So i've quickly tuned up the system and yes there is a huge difference in the sound, speech and all dialogue has become almost crystal clear, the bass response is more defined, when tuning the system i decreased the sub in almost half to get the same volume i had before, the room just sound sonically better. I still have some more panels to install but i think in one day i got allot done.

I'll keep you posted

I could probably pull this off later this year. Maybe sooner than I think. I just put up some pull-down light darkeners for light control in my room today on both windows. Before I had towels, blankets, and a pillow for light control. I got some brackets for my back surrounds so I can place them at the same height as my surrounds and have them further apart as well. I also got some brackets for my current surrounds to replace the rigged pieces of wood barely holding them now. Then I'm thinking of building two subwoofer stands and perhaps decouplers for all of my speakers. Then amplification, acoustic treatment, lighting, wire management (finish it up), ect. When will it end?
