Default Acoustic Treatment Research Material

Good day!

A couple of us have been having a great discussion regarding room acoustics, treatments and innovations as to how to further improve our current home theater setups, both dedicated and living areas... you can find that thread here, thanks to prerich...

Here is a great introduction to the topic...

http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...04-part-1.html

Although not as easy to read in the first place, this is tho a great amount of knowledge gathered by yet my much appreciated colleague, Irritate Guy over at Sound and vision magazine...

this is definitely a great place for those clamoring for information.

no more spoonfeeding so to speak.

again, it doesnt hurt to ask for more, or a little bit of clarification here or there, but its always great to skim thru the material at hand, and then let us know how we can further help out.

Myself and others (I'm sure) appreciate the effort Jomari!

I'm one of those that have been pushing for more education on room accoustics and treatments.

I certainly didn't have the time or patients to create this -- it looks like a great starting point (lots of information already).

Now lets just hope people put the information to use I will be digging through this stuff -- I'm sure there's quite a bit for me to learn as well.

Default Anyone Using Acoustic Panels In Their Theater/Audio Room?

I just installed six acoustic panels in my audio room and am really impressed with the noticable improvement that they make to the overall room acoustics. Echoes, reverbs, standing waveforms are all gone now. As a test I put on Eric Clapton's Pilgrim CD (which I thought was an audio nightmare for pre-panel setup) and am amazed at how truly detailed and lush the music is now.

The way that my HT is set up makes it practically impossible for me to really use acoustic panels for that application. The other part though is that my wife wouldn't stand for it from a purely artistic point of view. (It also doubles as our living room). Still, now I'm really starting to wonder about how much improvement I might hear if I could use them in my HT application.

Anybody using them? I'd like to know your before and after experiences.

for cinema rooms you should get a good result there too, depending how the room is laid out..i always try and balance a room as much as possible, that helps with imaging and balance of the sound.

real traps did a comparison between FBM and their own products, they concluded that FBM sucks. I have no experience of it myself, so cant comment further at this point

with regards to the acoustic resonators, this guy was apparently the 'original' developer.

frank tchangs resonators

although i highly doubt its performance, i cant really say much about it since i havent reviewed it nor had the pleasure of giving away my money to them.

lemme show you his picture tho. oh yes, im sure im going to get some nice replies on this one.

I picked up some foam from FoambyMail, and I'm happy with the results..... although I can't compare their product to anything else.... I'd be cautious of what opinions I take....... Real-Traps saying FBM sucks is like Bose saying Orb Audio sucks They are a competitor in one form or another.

For good acoustic environment you can use electroacoustic absorbers also.It helps in addressing the low frequency sound in a room.Corner bass trapping is one of the good solution for low frequency.

If you want some ideas on acoustic treatment of a room check out my profile (AJDR) and see the construction work I did in my HT. I worked with a Sound Engineer to advise me on the best solutions for a 8m x 8m room with hard surfaces (tiled floor, brick walls and concrete ceiling). If you want more details drop me a line and I can provide more information regarding the materials I used. The results are fantastic. Feel free to leave a comment and give it a rating.

Better for a professional to do it or DIY for this treatment?

You can make 100% of the acoustic treatments available on the market. The key is knowing where to place them.

You can use http://www.roomeqwizard.com/ to understand how sound is interacting with your room.

Some members here use it and can help you understand the graphs and results. Or you can check out one of the many REW forums.

They can make suggestions on what type of treatments you need and where to place them.

Or you can have a audio engineer to assist you. (There are more than a few audio engineers on a lot of forums that provide free assistance)

Anyone any experience with acoustic glass?
I'm not lucky enough to have a dedicated room and have a large window to contend with in my living room.

Was reading about this and thinking would it be worth the extra cash over standard double glazing.
It seems more suited for noise pollution which isn't my issue as I live in the country with no one near me,I would want it to be more indoor sound friendly.

No experience with this product (I do have their other items and it's very good). http://rpgacoustic.com/clearsorber-foil/

Could be pricey, though.
