It won't act as a diffuser, because you won't produce white noise. Instead it'll just scatter the sound a little. Impossible to say what will help, what won't and what will make it worse with anything not designed to be acoustic treatments.

I don't think there is a common store carrying acoustic foam. Be careful: acoustic foam is not just any foam. I believe it has a higher density than regular foam.

In your case, if a door is out of the question, try HEAVY curtains. Even several layers of heavy curtains. It will cut down some of the sound, but to be honest, I don't know how much. There are also acoustic curtains available made out of things like mass loaded vinyl... but that would be UUUUUGLY ![]() ![]() |

I wasn't sure where to post this and I didn't want to start a new thread.
Just wanted to share this link (not mine). It's a great example of how much of a difference room treatments can make.. shows how the listening room is just as important as the speakers you're buying. Measurements are shown before and after and even for a video camera you can really hear the difference - comparisons start at approx 3:30. Try switching out a receiver, amp, power chord or speaker cables on a video like this and I doubt the difference in sound would even be noticeable. Last edited by -DLS-; 12-16-2011 at 12:08 AM. |

Anyone who can tell me how much i need too compress uncompressed panels of Rockwool/Glaswool for it too match the rigid panels from Owens Corning?
Also how much more expensive would compressed panels be versus the uncompressed. Having a hard time finding the compressed types here in denmark much less the rest of europe. ![]() Last edited by spaceape; 01-06-2012 at 01:39 AM. |

Anyone know where I can get cheap sound proofing foam? I need it about the length of a door and preferably with sticky already on it (would be going on door / wall) in a closed space so hopefully no smell

Hey,
Just about ready to start on at least my first try of DIY panels for my HT. One thing though.... I want them to be black like velvet or something. I think I understand that the covering on the panels should be porous so that the sound enters the panel and I don't think Velvet will do. It's possible there is black burlap... whatever I use as the outer fabric should not reflect light and would be great if it actually absorbed stray light. =Brian |

I think black Guilford of Maine fabric is what you find on many of the commercially available ones. Supposedly pretty black, but not velvet. I think the material is even used on masking panels for acoustically transparent screens. So it has to be fairly descent in terms of light reflectivity.

I made 8 panels 24x48 with roc wool or whatever you call that stuff. Roxul ... something like that.
I covered them with munclin (or something like that... cheap fabric in the back) and "speaker cover" fabric from jo anns... it's pretty black. and pretty wonderful. I put up 2 panels on each of the side walls and the other 4 on the rear wall. I have always wanted to try this but 10 years went by in my HT before I got started. Sounds great ... so great... I watched some Skyfall then listened to music then Total Recall then Pirahna 3D ... whatever I watched ... sounded so good. Very happy with the project .. it was kind of fun too. I basically followed this video exactly with a couple things happening slightly different. http://video.search.yahoo.com/video/...&fr=aaplw&tt=b -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 05-22-2014 at 05:38 PM. |

For good acoustic environment you can use electroacoustic absorbers also.It helps in addressing the low frequency sound in a room.Corner bass trapping is one of the good solution for low frequency.

If you want some ideas on acoustic treatment of a room check out my profile (AJDR) and see the construction work I did in my HT. I worked with a Sound Engineer to advise me on the best solutions for a 8m x 8m room with hard surfaces (tiled floor, brick walls and concrete ceiling). If you want more details drop me a line and I can provide more information regarding the materials I used. The results are fantastic. Feel free to leave a comment and give it a rating.

Better for a professional to do it or DIY for this treatment?

You can make 100% of the acoustic treatments available on the market. The key is knowing where to place them.
You can use http://www.roomeqwizard.com/ to understand how sound is interacting with your room. Some members here use it and can help you understand the graphs and results. Or you can check out one of the many REW forums. They can make suggestions on what type of treatments you need and where to place them. Or you can have a audio engineer to assist you. (There are more than a few audio engineers on a lot of forums that provide free assistance) HTH |

Anyone any experience with acoustic glass?
I'm not lucky enough to have a dedicated room and have a large window to contend with in my living room. ![]() Was reading about this and thinking would it be worth the extra cash over standard double glazing. It seems more suited for noise pollution which isn't my issue as I live in the country with no one near me,I would want it to be more indoor sound friendly.
