Default PS3 problem

I've been having some trouble with my PS3(60gb) lately. Two problems really.

1. Sometimes it just wont play a dvd or blu-ray. Random when it happens, after loading one, and hitting play, it will go to a black screen and lock up. Only physically holding the power button will reset it. Sleeping Beauty will load the spinning gold wheel before the main menu, and lock up after that. This has only been happening for the last few weeks.

2. During almost every blu-ray or dvd I watch, I get at least 1 random black screen flash. Just an instant <1 second flash. Audio doesnt cut out. It's connected via brand new monoprice cl2 6ft hdmi cables, through my Onkyo 805. Haven't noticed it during any games yet.

It doesnt seem to match the common problems like the laser dying, or hard drive going bad... just wondering what it could be.

Sorry I cant help. My only advice would be to back up all your PS3 data in case it dies outright.

I don't have much on it to lose. Besides my lvl 55 on CoD and Rock Band scores, dont play much else.

This is typical of reading problems. It will sit and retry forever, and it appears to be a lockup. When this happens see if you can eject the disc. It may be that you just have dirty discs. Any time I've seen this happen, I pulled out the disc and found a big oily thumb print across it or something. Cleaned it off and put the disc back in, and no more trouble.

Is the time it's in the black screen similar to the time it takes when it switches resolutions? If so, then it could be bad HDMI dropping and then renegotiating.

Otherwise, it might be buffer underrun in the video stream... which might be caused by the same read problems as problem 1.

It sounds to me like it might be either dirty discs, dying laser, or bad HDMI.

Try connecting each HDMI cable to your TV directly, bypassing the 805 and the other cable and see if problem 2 goes away. If the problem shows up on only one cable, there's your culprit. If the problem shows up with neither cable directly connected, that points a guilty finger at the 805.

If problem 2 is caused by bad HDMI cabling/switch, it could potentially be the cause of problem 1. It may be that your lockups always occur at screen resolution changes whenever the HDMI renegotiates.

Anyway, those are some likely things to examine and try for diagnosis. I wish you luck.

It happens on my blu-rays.. which I keep in perfect conditon. The HDMI cables are literally brand new, out of wrapper last night, hooked up, and put in iRobot. Not 10 minutes into it, black screen flash. I will try hooking it straight through the tv though.

Try shutting everything off and just unplugging the HDMI cord then replug it. Seems they need that once in a while. My PS3 has done the same thing.

All the more reason to suspect the cables. Most times bad cables are brand new. Defective manufacture. It can happen with any brand. Once a new cable has proven itself reliable, it won't normally 'go bad' later unless something savage happens to it.

That shouldn't be necessary. I've never had to do that with my PS3. And I doubt others are having to do that either. If you need to reseat your HDMI cable every so often, that points to a faulty connector either on the cable or on the PS3.
