Default Ughhh! I hate you upgraditis and want a new subwoofer

Hello all,

So, I have quite a bit of money coming to me and have decided to get a good subwoofer, even though that I have an okay one that I bought about a year ago, maybe a little more. Let's be honest here, the PSW111 is a good sounding sub, but it can be a little boomy and it has no punch and is not able to produce the lower end like my car's subwoofer can. I am looking at either an 8" or a 10" and would like to keep it under $500. As much as I would like to give Elemental Designs a try, I don't want a unit that big and ultimately want a front firing unit with a down firing passive subwoofer. I also want the frequency range to start at about 20hz to get the sound I want, which probably means I need a 10". I am open to many suggestions and look forward to your imput. Damn you upgraditis. When will it end?

I know it's over your budget (that's what this hobby is all about) but I'd try to find a ML Dynamo..... 10", it is very fast and accurate..... and small..... makes it very versatile too, in addition to being either front or downward firing. JJ has one... not sure who else here has one..... I'm auditioning subs right now, and had auditioned these in the past, and love them..... either way, I want to do multiple subs because of my "difficult" room.... and may bring a couple of these or the Abyss's into the mix.....

Like I said... over the budget.... but it's the best "smaller" sub I have listened to.

I just got the Acoustic Audio HD-SUB10 10" 300 watts continous 600 peak powered sub it is front firing but has a slotted port at the top, it replaced a Sony sub that was boomy too. I purchased this with lots of help from Big Daddy and it is actually quite accurate and has good punch. There are 12" and 10" versions of it too.

Here is the link to the forum I just got done upgrading all my speakers. I think I may actually pick up a second one of these subs when the WAF goes back up, or I sell my old speakers. For $160 it is really nice.

Yeah, I went to Best Buy's website and saw that an was intrigued. I'll just say, while above what I want to spend, I could definitely afford it and will keep this on my list.

I love my PA-120 (Premier Acoustics) but it's far enough below your budget that I'd recommend a real hard look at SVS or HSU or AV-123. Those three internet-direct dealers are going to give you the most bang for your buck, and they are smaller/more attractive than the eD (though I do like their new lines, they're still huge!).

I have the 12" version of this SVS sub.

http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10nsd.cfm

The 10" is only $399.

EDIT: I love it. I think it hits hard when it needs to and fills the room (11x15) nicely.

could do what i do: set aside a little here a little there (she doesnt notice), eventually i save enough to get what i want. then when it materialize in the entertainment center and she finally notices, i tell her i sold some stuff (things she doesnt pay attention too) on ebay to get it.

Upgraditis is the devil....I think i'll have to buy my surrounds this week. I've looked at the ml dynamo or svs for a sub...I also thought about the mirage subs as they seem fairly small and sounded good (one I listend to anyways). My htib Onkyo sub will work till I get the 7.1 setup sold...then probably get a new sub. Anyone here have a Mirage sub and what do you think of them?

I have a bad case of it, too. The Klipsch has been great but I want something better. (Un)fortunately for me, my son has been very ill and we're up to our eyeballs in medical bills.

Hah, that's what I did with my fronts and center. Well, I actually did sell them but may have exaggerated to her what I got for them...

He didn't want a sub this big...I also would consider this sub if it wasn't as big as it was.

Seems like he has a bedroom setup...like myself...the A2-300 is fairly big for most bedrooms.

upgraditis is difficult to control. You won't be able to set aside money and wait until you have enough for what you really want. You will always have to buy right then and there. Last Oct. all I wanted was a new sub, and I was limiting it to $400, I ended up spending $3000 for a sub and a few other speakers.

I am very happy to report that I have absolutely no upgraditis at all in the subwoofer department!

Why is the passive radiator such a concern? If you want great performance from a Sub and don't want the footprint of the eD then consider the SVS PB-10NSD. It's $399, is front firing and has accurate response to 20Hz.

http://svsound.com/products-sub-box-10nsd.cfm

It's 15" wide.
