Default How is DTS-HD og DolbyTRUEHD downmixed

Unfortunately, I do not own a surround system yet, but have a pretty nice stereo system. I was wondering what I actually hear from the two new blue-ray audio formats via the analogue stereo out on a decent blue ray player. Because the two new formats are only surround what are they downmixed to in terms of audio quality. I hope it is not down to a 48/16 pcm, but something better than rb cd.

Is there anybody who actually know this?

Well, I may not be correct in this, but I'm 99% sure that I am. The HD audio tracks (DTS-HD and DDTrueHD) all have the basic core tracks inside of them (DTS5.1 and DD5.1, respectivly). So my assumption would be, whatever your system decodes them to now, would be the same for Blu-ray and HD audio. You may pick up subtle diffences, as the core tracks are encoded at high bit-rates (varies from film to film), but in a 2 speaker set-up, I don't really know if you'd be able to tell.
Time to Upgrade buddy!

Thanks for the answer. Yes I should upgrade, but it will take me some time to buy a decent set up. I have the Pathos One plus B&W 703 speakers and I want a surround setup that is as good for stereo and that cost a lot!

First off, downmixing consists of reducing the number of channels, not the sampling rate or bit depth. If the original is 5.1 48/24, then you'll get a stereo mix that is still 48/24.

Nearly all movies have 48kHz sampling rates. Only a handful have 96kHz.

TrueHD has an embedded lossless stereo core track. dts-MA and multichannel PCM tracks have downmix instructions in the metadata. It is my undedrstanding that the genuine stereo mix done for TrueHD is likely a better mix than the downmixes done for other formats.

Nice! I had the 703's and HTM7 for my front..... but unfortunately I have never pushed them with anything other than an AVR...... downgraded to 705's though

Either way.... it seems like you started in the right direction with your 2 channel.... but if you watch enough movies, it's a must to upgrade!

Have you considered a short-term AVR setup to run surrounds, while using a dedicated amp and processor for 2 channel?
