I just got a new sony STR-DH800 reciver and SA-W3000 sub, my old reciver did not decode current audio tracks from bluray and now i've hooked my ps3 up via hdmi and linear pcm 48 still shows up during Transformers when i've selected DolbyTrueHD, can anyone help?

This has been discussed many times in the forum. The lights on your receiver will not come on as the receiver is not decoding the audio codec. The PS3 only has the capability of decoding the codec and sending it via PCM to your receiver. You cannot bitstream from the PS3.

Incorrect. A PS3 will decode Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio on board and pass the signal as PCM over HDMI to your receiver.

So is PCM over HDMI better than Bitstream over HDMI?

Basically it's the same thing, the difference is which components converts the track to LPCM (player or receiver).

PCM=decoded TrueHD, so you hear the same noise out of your speakers whether your PS3 or your receiver is doing the decoding.

Oooooo, don't start that argument.

In a nutshell, they are the same. Only in your case (and mine), you need to set the PS3 to PCM so that it decodes the HD audio codects and sends them to your receiver. If you don't, and you set the PS3 to bitstream, all you will get will be lossy 5.1 (and sometimes 2.0) audio.
