Default 7.1 Dolby TruHD downmixed to 5.1?

This article about the PS3 states the following:

Quote:
"Bitstream"ing of Dolby TrueHD audio is currently not supported on the PS3. The PS3 must decode the signal internally and only the HDMI cable is supported. In addition, 7.1 channels are downmixed to 5.1 channels of Linear PCM. TOSLINK not supported because of bandwidth issues.
Also, I didn't know PS3 supported DTS-HD, and can DTS-HD use TOSLINK????:
Quote:
dts-HD High Resolution Audio (dts-HD HRA) is a lossy format and is supported in the PS3. However decoding is supported for both "bitstream" and "Linear PCM" in the PS3. dts-HD HRA is dts Digital Surround (the Core) plus any extra frequencies or channels up to 7.1. However, the PS3 will downmix 7.1 channels to 5.1 channels before sending it down the HDMI or TOSLINK. If selecting "Linear PCM", TOSLINK can only ouput stereo channels.

there is no need to downmix a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 to 5.1 . because Dolby TrueHD doesn't currently have any 7.1 movies. all current Dolby TrueHD movies are 5.1

PS3 does support DTS HD, but not DTS HD Master Audio

I figured there were not TrueHD 7.1 movies, but that's not really the point.
If there ever would be a 7.1 TrueHD movie released, what would happen when played on a PS3, downmix to 5.1 or will it be 7.1? Same question applies to 7.1 LPCM.

I didn't know DTS-HD was supported, because I didn't see the logo on the PS3. Just the regular DTS logo (no HD imprinted).
And is DTS-HD possible over TOSLINK? Or is DTS-HD only available via HDMI?

7.1 LPCM is currently supported with the PS3. If a DolbyTrueHD 7.1 were to come out, I assume that the internal decoder would decode all 8 channels of audio and then send it to the audio receiver via HDMI, but we won't know for sure until we actually see a Dolby TrueHD 7.1.

The PS3 is capable of processing a DTS HD hi res (1500kbps of compressed audio, not lossless) which is less compression compared to a regular DVD DTS audio(around 750 kbps)

Hmm, interesting, really curious as to how they determined the 5.1 support regarding Dolby TrueHD.

Especially, since Dolby labs claims the PS3 supports 7.1 Dolby TrueHD.

No lossless audio can go through toslink optical. All will be downmixed to 2.0.
I'm not to sure about bitstreaming, but I'm sure you can't do it toslink, only through hdmi.
