Default BigDaddy-HSU Cylinder?

BigDaddy, I believe you have one or more late 90s model HSU cylinder sub. Would one be the TN 1225? Are these quality subs in your opinion and would this model be superior to a new ed a2-250? This sub is good to 18HZ. If this is a good option for a used 10 year sub what would be a good current price? How problematic were the HSU separate amps with these passive subs? Thanks for any advice you might give...Jaybird4

I bought my subwoofers in 1998. The model number is HRSW12Va. They are short and fat cylinder type passive subwoofers. I did not buy the external amplifiers from Hsu Research as I already owned multiple amplifiers. The price I paid for the two, including an external high definition crossover and tax was $1,543.50. Recently, I upgraded the 12" drivers on both of them. Here is a picture.

The subwoofer you are looking for is from 2002-2003 and is more tube like. Here is a picture.

It is a very high quality top-of-the-line subwoofer with very good low frequency extension. If the one you are thinking about is in good shape, it will definitely outperform most box type subwoofers and has much more WAF appeal. Unfortunately, I don't have personal experience with the sub and cannot tell you more. Read the following:

BigDaddy, Your first link was the sub I was considering. I just won it on eBay and I thank you for helping me to decide on it over a new ed a2-250. The current owner says he purchased it in 02 and has not used it since 05 and that it is in mint condition. Hopefully this is all correct. I might need you to help me dial this sucker in...Jaybird4

Good luck. I hope it is as good as the former owner says. There is an Official Hsu Research Subwoofers Thread. Once you have it set up, post some pictures and comments there.

If you can't find it on HSU site try SVS Subwoofers they also do cylinder subs as did HSU.

BigDaddy, Will do. I emailed HSU and asked for any owner's manuals or whatever and they replied that they no longer have anything for this model(TN-1225) and 150W HSU amp. Looks like they could at least forward me the stuff they had back in 2002...Jaybird4

Default TN-1225 Connections

BigDaddy, The sub arrived today and it has the 150W HSU apm as well. The Onkyo 340 receiver has a single sub out connection, the HSU amp has a R and L input and a R and L output and the sub has a R and L input. I have a single high quality 20' RCA cable from Monoprice that I cuttently use with my Onyx x-sub. So do I need Y adapters from the Onkyo to go from 1 output to 2 inputs on the amp and at the other end of the amp to the single cable to the sub and at the sub as well? Any help is appreciated...Jaybird4

If you are going to connect only one subwoofer, run a single subwoofer cable (make sure it is RG6 cable for better shielding) from the Onkyo to the Hsu amplifier. You can connect it only to the left input. However, if you buy a Y adapter (2 male, 1 female) and connect it to both inputs, you may get an additional 3 to 6db of bass sound. That is the way I have my subs connected. I know that some people are going to jump on this and say that you can turn up the volume of the sub by 3db. My answer is that a Y adapter costs a couple of dollars.

Make sure you run the calibration program after your sub is connected. Also experiment with the placement of the sub in the room. Sub placement is probably the most important factor in the quality of bass sound in your room.
