After ai got the latest releases this month
- Major League (DOLBY True HD) - Star trek "Movie trillogy" ( (DOLBY True HD) And some months ago - Max Payne (DTS Master HD) Where u have a sound that is a amazing a sound that comes trough the room like u are INSIDE movies. If u compare the two formats DTS Or Dolby true hd. DTS Is just amazing to any kind of sound it almost blows you out of the seat. But........ Dolby True HD....... whats hd about this anyway.... to me it sounds flat with no life. So what kan we do to get more studios to use DTS. ? I want all releases to be DTS. |

Interesting topic, and its about time that we discuss it on this board.
For those of you that might consider bringing science and reason to this thread, we'd rather not have it. This is about comparing soundtracks from completly different movies and different studios and different eras, and fighting about how they make us feel. I think Ironman sounds better than Flyboys, do DTS HDMA is better. ![]() |

Sorry to stray off topic here, but does anyone know if this new hdmi 1.4 spec supports lossless audio? If not, this whole debate will be mute. For one, I am tired of being forced into upgrades from hdmi's rediculous gameplan. My 02. !

I prefer the DTS flavor mainly because it leaves more space for other stuff. With the DTS Core, there's no need for a companion, lower res track so there's more space for video, extra features, multiple HD res language tracks, single encode for multiple countries, regions, etc. These things add up to me to mean more content with less work, same lossless audio quality and cheaper production costs.
I have excellent gear and am unable to tell the difference between the two save the +db that seems to come with DTS which is easily remedied. |

DING DING!
(cue the tall leggy blonde in a bikini) Round #3184 P.S. DTS HD MA sounds amazingly more realistic and dynamic than TrueHD tracks... even with volume equalization and DRC turned off!!! ![]() I agree that this thread should not be about scientific details. While I have to agree with many of you in saying that Dolby Digital HD is a bit lackluster, it does have it's strong points. As mentioned above, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is just incredible. However, I prefer the more realistic DTSHD-MA mix on Criterion's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".
Oh, and the "Pinnochio" mix, c'mon people the movie and audio track are 70 years old!! You can not use that as an argument against modern movies. Plus, when you consider the film originally had a mono track, I think the folks at Disney did a pretty outstanding job with what they had to work with. I dunno, to me as long as it's High quality sound I'm happy. Hell, the audio on the standard DVD of "Master and Commander" blows a lot of Blu-ray out of the water (pun sort of intended) If I had to choose, I'm a DTS guy, always have been. |

I chose True-HD. Given that they are both lossless and are theoretically equal, its not fair to compare them sonically since mixes vary.
The following are the CONS for DTS-HD: 1) Some BD player still cannot decode the format. Not a fault of dts-hd itself, but for some users of certain players. 2) Dts bomb issue. Many people out there still have receivers without the update and may experience this. Hope it will not damage their speakers or hearing. One user at avsforum even posted of having the dts bomb with the DSP update playing the movie 'Australia'. I also like that I can use the 'Late night" feature on my receivers with Dolby digital and True-HD. Although I guess its possible to do the same for DTS-HD if the player has a DRC control option, but then you cannot bitstream it. |

We have discussed this topic many times before. Please read the following threads and stop wasting your time.
PCM is a procedure to convert analog audio to digital. Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD MA are two zipping programs that losslessly convert and compress digital sound. Once decoded and uncompressed, the two codecs yield identical results. On some titles, Dolby TrueHD sounds better. On other titles, DTS HD MA sounds better. On a few titles (e.g., Divertimenti) both codecs sound exactly the same. On many movie and music titles, DTS HD MA is irritatingly louder, not better. The difference is in the mix, not the codec. Decoded DolbyTrueHD = Decoded DTS HD MA = LPCM https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=64704 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=64206 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=97100 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=57828 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=67867 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=64343 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=60819 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=98498 |
