Default newbie help needed

ive started picking up a few records here and there. a friend is letting me borrow his kenwood tt well when i went to hook it up first thing i notice is a ground lug, i have nowhere to put this. i hook it up and volume is low and full of static. i try to put the lug in the antenna side ground, but sounds the same. since my receiver does not have a phono input i need something else? what do i are there any tt that dont need any thing else?

It's not going to work with your existing amp/receiver. You'll need to get a phono preamp to make it work. You also need to know what type of cartridge is mounted on the tonearm. Moving Magnet, Moving Iron or Moving Coil. If it's a moving coil you'll need a preamp that can specifically handle the low output of a moving coil cartridge.

If this is just a borrowed TT, you may not want to waste money on a preamp until/if/when you decide to purchase your own TT.

Sorry.

I totally agree with Fred on this. Since you posted in this sub-forum, you're going to get everybody telling you that you should get a TT, and since you're borrowing one I'm guessing their is an interest on your part to consider such a purchase. Would I be correct in that?

I would NOT recommend that you do that! You'd be better off getting a second hand real TT.

Totally agree with John, start checking out http://www.audiogon.com You can great deals on there. Just make sure the seller you buy from has reputable feedback.

I would look at a Project Debut III or a rega P1.

My advice, keep the Kenwood TT for now and order one of these cheapo phono pre amps:

http://www.phonopreamps.com/tc400pp.html

Not the best but my friend is using one and he is happy with it. This way you can test vinyl out and see if it's for you. If you decide it isn't then you only have 30 bucks invested and can move on.

A lot of people don't realize it's not like slapping in a CD and going, playing vinyl has almost a ritual to it.

CK's suggestion is also a good one. Just decide how much you want to spend. I've had very good purchasing experiences with this outfit: http://www.lpgear.com/Merchant2/merc...tegory_Code=PP

Let me add my voice of dissent: don't waste your money on one of those Ion things (or anything like it). Save up for something like the Rega P1 or Pro-Ject Debut III. You'll need a separate phono preamp too, but you'll get much better results (and you can get that now).

I've ordered new belts for both TT's and hope to be listening shortly. Money has been a little tight and I need 4 new snowtires this year ($800), so my HT is on the backburner for now. I am hoping to get everything up and running by year end, including possibly an upgrade of some kind.

John
