Smile Newbie to hdmi Help needed :)

Firstly let me say hello and thanks to all for welcoming me to this forum. Lot's of knowledge on here... Kudos to all...

I have a sharp lc46d64u and a sharp bdhp20 blue ray. I have the blue ray running hdmi to the tv and optical for sound to my Marantz sr5001. Want to know if I should run hdmi from blueray to marantz then to t.v. or stick with optical for sound.

I have to return the t.v. as I have a dead pixel showing on black screen as well as some fine scratches behind the lcd panel. On black screen is noticable close up with backlight shining through. Is this a common flaw with lcd? Just hoping the rep[lacement won't be worse. Nothing wrong with the set other than that.

If you are able to run HDMI to and from reciever, then that is the best thing to do...

Default Hmmm

I can run HDMI from the blue ray to the amp and then to the lcd. Is the sound gonna be any different than the optical? And how will the video be? The blue ray has one output. Will I lose any processing running through the amp as opposed to direct from the bd? My amp is hdmi1.1 so I can't see that making a difference.

According to the owners manual it can accept pcm over hdmi. You need to set you player up to send the audio over hdmi by lpcm, meaning that the player is decoding the audio. Then you can playback the audio through your receiver.

So, yes, you can connect your player to the receiver by hdmi and then to the tv.

With your current player you can decode Dolby TrueHD, but not DTS HD-MA. So, you can get HD audio from all PCM and Dolby True HD encoded movies, but will only get the core DTS track on DTS HD-MA encodes.

Thanks... When I get my 3 monoprice hdmi cables this week I will run the blue ray to the amp and then to the tv for video. I am getting pcm on the amp now with optical so it's pretty good. Will have to see the difference. Will there be any video difference going through the amp instead of direct?

You wont be able to get the new Lossless audio formats through Optical, which you want to run..

If you are running pcm through optical your only getting stereo sound. PCM over hdmi will give you 5.1 surround sound at lossless quality. With optical you are getting 2.0 pcm or 5.1 lossy.

Thanks kp thats what I thought. I appreciate the answers and feedback. The new technology is something I need to learn about. I just upgraded from all my old equipment. My boss bought me the lcd as a gift. Will I lose any video quality though not running direct from the blue ray and through the amp? I see my amp showing 5.1 and 6.1 through optical though. Strange.

No, the video will not be compromised.

It's probably bitstreaming, not pcm.

Does that Blu-Player decode the Audio???? if not, that's unfortunate (assuming firmware updates can't correct that)
