Default Watching Blu Ray over component on a PS3

Hey everyone, I was just wondering if, when watching a Blu Ray movie on my PS3 with component cables, the video is at all compromised?

My TV doesn't have HDMI inputs, but it has component, so I plan to plug in my PS3 with that. However, I was reading that if you watch Blu Ray on anything other than HDMI or DVI, the video gets scaled back pretty terribly for some crappy copyright protection reasons. Is there any truth to this?

I'd hate to have just spent $700 on a PS3 plus cables and not be able to watch Blu Ray movies in all their sexy glory, just because my parents bought a TV like a year before HDMI became widespread.

Thanks!

Is your tv HD? I've never heard of an HDTV without HDMI inputs.
If your tv isn't HDTV there is no reason at all, you won't see a difference.
I'm sorry, maybe you just wasted some money...
Totally disregard this, if it is a HDTV, but still, my honest guess is that you really need a HDMI cable
to see it like you're supposed to.

component cables will still provide you with an excellent HD picture (provided you have an HDTV...there are TV's that have component inputs but aren't HD), so it is definitely worth buying into bluray!

i'm not terribly tech-savvy, so someone else will have to advise you on the major differences between component over hdmi. there are numerous members on here well versed in this kind of stuff, and i'm sure someone will pop in here to explain further..

?

There were many HDTV's made without HDMI inputs.

To the OP, I can't remember what the PS3 will do with component but some of my best PQ 1080i/720p HD picture has been through component cables. I don't recall any BD having the ICT on them yet do require them downrezzed. Also, I don't think the PS3 will upconvert a DVD over component.
My info could be dated as I don't follow the PS3 much since I sold mine.

According to the PS3 manual the PS3 will actually do 1080p over component (but I can't confirm it), and according to the amazon page http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-...8775381&sr=8-1 it says it only does 1080i/720p, but since your TV is older, it might not do 1080p, but it should still look fine.

*this is all of course based on old info that the PS3 was not down-rezzing the component output. I don't remeber if they ever started doing that or not.

your tv only accepts 1080i, so, just set the PS3 to 1080i and you'll be fine. While not a progressive resolution, it will still be HD.

the manual doesnt actually say what the output resolution for upscaled video is over component, but I would assume it would max out at 1080i as do most component connections. Not to mention, this little stipulation:

Hi,

PS3 will output 1080i max from component.

It looks great though... not very gimped.

PS3 will upconvert un-encrypted DVDs via component. (like if you have home movies on DVD.)

I still don't know what TV you have but you can get a HDFury that will convert DVI to RGBVH and then use a HDMI to DVI cable from the PS3. That way you can get all the stuff... 1080p and upconverted DVD and all that if you TV is ready for it.

Thanks for the detailed replies, guys!

The consensus seems to be that I should be able to watch Blu Ray discs over component in resolutions of up to 1080i, but DVDs won't be upscaled, correct?

as for the poster, I had my PS3 connected through HDComponent (the red/green/blue cables) for a while and it still looked beautiful. While you can tell a difference between component and HDMI, component still looks significantly better than any dvd you can buy. You still get all of the blu-ray goodness, just not as good as HDMI. But still it is worth it (i had my PS3 connected through HDComponent for around 4 months before switching to DVI)

The picture will not be compromised that much considering you have no reference (like a side by side comparison). Some things that you are missing out on if important to you are Deep Color HDMI 1.3 spec and HD audio (unless you are achieving this somehow else.

I'm using a Sony HD CRT Trintron Wega (Yes, the 200 pound gorilla) as a secondary t.v. in another room and have a PS3 hooked up to it and it looks nice. I'm in the same boat with this t.v., it's 1080i/480p/480i with no HDMI or DVI , just Component.
It's still way better than a normal dvd presentation, and gaming is also great, especially when you got COD WAW in 1080i or even Killzone 2 in 1080i.
I use my other 1080p t.v. for most BD movies but will on ocassion watch one on the Wega and it looks good.

I agree calibrate your t.v. and keep using that viewing mode. I have a few viewing options like vivid, movie, standard, pro, And each one will either boost contrast or tone it down, but looked like garbage till I calibrated it.

OP here, and I finally got it all hooked up. I found out the TV's model number - we've got a Toshiba 32SW9UA, which can display up to 1080i. Also, it seems as though the PS3 doesn't downscale Blu Ray movies via component at all. Watched The Dark Knight and was absolutely blown away by the detail! So this TV will well and truly tide me over until I win the lottery or stop being a uni student.

I'm curruntly using PS3 and component cables with my old Sony HDTV with no HDMI hook up. Pic looks good with 1080i setup.

Now if I can get a small home theater setup.
