Question PS3 blu-ray over component

So when I'm home for the summer months I'm on a big screen that only has component in for hdtv... is there any way to watch blu-rays on my ps3 using the component out? I use HDMI the other 10 months of the year, but my TV here doesn't have HDMI ins...

I'm sure there's probably *some* way to make it work, so if anyone could point me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it.

I really hate the idea of shelving my blu-rays for a couple months, they'll just be sitting on the shelf, taunting me to buy a better tv

Component looks awesome on the ps3.. only thing is it's 1080i and not 1080p. not a big enough deal to let your poor blu's just sit there collecting dust IMO

No, it'll definately work. You'll just be getting 1080i, not 1080P. (Or 720P depending on your settings and TV )

ohh so it still works anyway?? the manual says you can't play blu rays over anything except hdmi.

i'm perfectly happy with 1080i, i just thought it wouldn't work at all...

I believe the manual mentions that component won't upconvert your regular DVDs but only HDMI cable will.

Ah... so it will output as 1080i over component because of copyright-protected content? That's good to know. I always said that component had signal drawbacks because of the fact that the image is spliced apart and put back together. Now this is just one more tool to use in my attack against "Component is ALWAYS exactly the same as HDMI" arguements.

for 1080p you need an HDMI cable...but I can see how it confused you.

Yeah, I've heard it can only upconvert over HDMI, that stinks. good thing it can still do blu though.

I use Component to my Sony KV-34XBR800 from the PS3....you have to buy either the Sony cable or an off-brand made specifically for the PS3....pretty cheap though....around $20...........because my set, even though it's HDCP compliant will not display a picture via HDMI to DVI from the PS3. Works fine with my Directv HR20 however.

Anyway, 1080i Blu-Ray via the Component output to this set is fantastic. My set's resolution is max 1080i anyway and will not do 1080p. Beautiful picture.

Monster makes a component cable set that may be used with PS3. Since the Multi-AV plug out is proprietary, it's probably the best one available. It contains both the 3 component cables along with the left/right audio cables as well. The PS2 version is identical and typically can be found much cheaper than the PS3 branded version. I received it as a bonus gift with a game purchase, and I use it primarily for the 2 channel analog connection with SACDs.

The PQ still looks great over component. It should tide you over until you are HDMI ready.

The upconversion of your DVD's is not possible through Component Video Cables, but your Blu's will be fine through Component. I just recently switched from Component to HDMI when I upgraded my Receiver. The difference in Component vs HDMI while watching DVD's is huge.

Hold on, I need a special component cable for the PS3?
Can I get one from Monoprice? Or is it only from Sony or Monster?

consoles have thier own hook up connection. the one on the ps3 is the same as the ps2. one end is the audio video cables you we all know and the other end is a special hook up on the console. the ps3 comes with compisite video cables but you can buy on with component video. there are other brands that sell them besides sony or monster (i have monster and use when i dont use surround). but i think that monster tends to be a little longer than others.

as far as hdmi, its the same on all components with hdmi. all youll need is a hdmi cable from anywhere

As you can see, unlike the MultiOut cable that comes with every PS3, the PS3 component cable has more RCA connectors out of it. You can get that from Monoprice at US$5.42. They also sell another component cable but for all three game consoles: PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.

Ah, thank you.
So I let the 2 RCA hang, right?
Since I don't have HDMI, I'll use optical.
