Default Blu-ray on component PS3 in HD ?

It's just a question, but I was using my PS3 as a blu-ray player with HDMI cable with a DVI/HDMI adaptor, but my DVI card broke in my TV, so until it get repaired, I have to plug my PS3 via component cable... But I was surprised to see that the quality of the picture was still really good !

In fact, I was just watching Sunshine and tried to look at the PIP extras alone (so in full screen instead of in a little square during the movie) and those videos got the PS3 to output 480 (I can see it by pressing the PS button, the menu appears bigger and fuzzier) while when I went back to the movie, the output resolution went back to 1080i... Does that mean that my movie is still in HD even if I don't use HDMI ?

You don't get 1080P out of DVI anyway do you? It is probably the same PQ.

My TV is 1080i anyway

So it means that even in component, I'm watching my movies in HD ? Even if Sony said that it needed HDCP to enable it ?

Component video is capable of carrying signals such as 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, although some TVs do not support 1080p through component video.

Thought only HDMI would do 1080p

If I can see my movies in HD analog with my component cables, how come sony is blocking the HDMI signal with HDCP protection ? I tought that it was impossibe to watch Blu-ray movies in HD (720p, 1080i or 1080p) without using a HDMI cable plugged in a HDCP input ?

you're not getting the picture in 1080p, so they don't care.

You can do 1080p over DVI-->HDMI as long as both components support HDCP and the DVI cord/adapters do too. Which is most of them, so most are good.

Correct.

My Sony KV-34XBR800 has a DVI connection that is HDCP compliant, but will not produce a picture via HDMI from the PS3 to DVI.....long story...tried everything....so I use the Component output from the PS3.....no worries....the TV is 1080i and the picture is hi-def and fantastic.

My Directv HR20 works fine to my TV via HDMI to DVI.....go figure.
