Large OR Small

my receiver and speakers are in my signature. my receiver gives me the option to put the speakers as small or large. whats the difference. whats the better option? im at work now so i cant test for my self

If your speakers can play flat to 20Hz (hint: yours can't), set them to large.

Otherwise, set them to small and let your subwoofer do what it's good at - playing the low frequencies.

It is normally advised to put your speakers to small if you are using a sub. It is less stress on the receiver to drive your main speakers and you let the sub do what it is suppose to do. But you can always try both for your personal preference.

For me, my speakers are small for HT but I run them full for 2 channel music and do not use my sub.

I personally don't think that there is a member here who own speakers that go down to 20hz-flat. Since the OP owns floor standers I recommend the he plays with the settings and see what fits his tastes best. As far as my set up is concerned, I run L/C/R speakers as "LARGE" and set the crossover @ 40Hz.

these speakers are small so i would personally set them to small.

Can you really set the crossover if you are running them at large? Or is the crossover set for the surrounds?

rded edited his previous posting, mentioning to set the speakers to small. but to further this discussion, id suggest a little reading here...

in a nutshell tho, its not necessarily coined properly in my opinion, to determine if the speaker is large or small. it sometimes can be confusing at times. id rather have them called something else. something similar to onkyo's full band and then crossover points as increments.

back to the question.

when you set the speakers to Large and try to set crossover settings at any point, it does NOT filter the said bandwidth to go to the subwoofer.

for example,
Settings:
Speakers - Large
Crossover - 80Hz
Result:
LCR speakers - full bandwidth is sent to the speakers, including 80hz and below.

Settings
Speakers - Small
Crossover - 80Hz
Result:
LCR speakers (including surrounds) - anything 80hz and under will be sent to subwoofer (with a little rollover at certain points)

Crossover settings are only active when you choose SMALL in the speaker settings, setting speakers at LARGE BYPASSES the crossover settings you input.

Yes, that was my point - perhaps I was being too subtle.

Look at my system - I set everything to small.
