Arrow Wolverine Buzz - $80million opening?!

Nikki Finke is reporting that rival studios are predicting an $80 million!

Quote:
Twentieth Century Fox internally is projecting $70M-$75M in domestic box office gross. But there wasn't any foaming at the mouth at Fox when I passed along that rival studios were predicting $80M for the May 1st opening weekend of its summer blockbuster X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Then again, fans are expecting a big fat debut along the order of the 2006 threequel X-Men: The Last Stand's $102.7M, not the 2003 sequel X-Men: United's $85.5M. (They cost $210+M and $110+M, respectively.) How much the film exceeds that number depends on the toll taken by all that piracy mishegoss. And whether this 4th pic in the franchise is deemed any good. For those keeping score, X-Men opened to $54.4M back in 2000.

I could see it making $80 or even more, just because of those X-Men fanboys!

Does Comic-book fanboy count?!

Granted I wasn't in line to see (or ever saw for that matter) craptacular titles like Electra or Daredevil... but once Marvel/DC learned not to put superstars in thier movies, things have worked out well! That said, Jackman is now a household name, but reprising the role that made him famous, so I'm not gonna complain.

Back to the movie... originally when I heard the premise... my first thought was... wow... a movie based on the most overexposed character in comic history... then, after I saw X-men 3 ... well I wasn't sure what more they could do I guess.

Anyhoo, after seeing the trailers, I guess my comic nerdiness is winning out, because I'm more and more excited with every trailer I see. I am still bummed that it's PG-13... and kinda worried they may be biting off more than they can chew (Telling the Origin comic story, and throwing in everyone from Gambit, to Blob, to Cyke)... I hope they don't over-do it with too many characters... I must say though... Gambit, Deadpool do get me pretty pumped.

Final thoughts... I'll be there opening weekend for sure contributing to that 80 million goal, but I was hoping for an 'R' rating. Also... no Maverick!? WTF?

I honestly think the piracy buzz will help the film's opening. I think the only people who will bother to get the leaked film are people who are going to see it anyway. I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised. I would say a 100 million dollar opening.

They should put a digital watermark on every copy they pass out so they can identify the source of the leak. Maybe they did that.

I am not sure about the $80 million opening. Sure, it's a movie about Wolverine and the X-Men have had sucess in the past, but the leak and negative reactions by fanboys has me doubting. I'm sure I shall go to see this once, though. Who knows for sure until after the tickets and money is counted.

I think this movie will struggle to make $80 million opening weekend. Fanboys have not been wild about this movie and Jackman is not a star like Will Smith that guarantees box-office gold.

I grew up reading the X-Men and it was my all time favorite comic, but I have to say I'm not to impressed with what I've seen on the TV spots. Also, in the commercial it shows Wolvie as a child and he has his claws? From what I remember, and this was also addressed in X2 he didn't get his claws until he became a part of the Weapon X program. His mutant power he was born with was the ability to heal himself rapidly. Think I'll pass on this until a Blu-ray release then I'll Netflix it first.

His mutant ability is claws (non-metal) and his healing power. The X-program bonded the adamantium to his existing claws/bones making him nigh-indestructible... that's what we saw in X-2. He was the only one who could go through the process due to his healing powers I believe.

Young Wolverine is unveiled in the awesome 6-part 2001 mini titled simply "Origin". If you get a chance you should pick up a copy... good stuff!

Thanks, it has been a while since I've read a comic or seen the movies. Will have to check out the Origin story.

The trailer included in The Day Earth Stood Still looks great. Still, $80 million would be a huge start for the Summer season.

I'm scared to make a prediction after F&F opening, I will be shocked if it does though.

way more. If F&F made over 70 this can do way more. And I love F&F so don't take that as a neg comment

Well, I wouldn't say that it was crap, and with it being unfinished I am withholding final judgement, but they treated Deadpool horribly. I don't have an unlimited amount of money and there are a bunch of movies I want to see this summer, so I plan on waiting for the Blu-ray. I don't have a lot of faith though that the finished version will be much better.

And for the record I rather like Punisher: War Zone.

I can definitely see this doing super well. Obviously the other X-Men movies did well and Wolverine was basically the star in those. It is also in the same time-slot as Iron Man was (though I actually think that the whole "Summer Blockbuster" is a self fulfilling prophecy).

And as said before, those who pirated the film are people who would have done it anyway and not seen the movie in theaters or are people who are going to see it regardless.

I also hope it does really well because that would give further incentive for a Deadpool spin-off. *Crosses fingers*
