Did you have to pay for tax and shipping? If so how much for shipping?

Sony was ready for this.

SOny knew that HD DVD players were going to be slashed.

So they had this player ready for price point as a counter offense.

Now what will be very exciting for us Blu Ray Supporters are the sales numbers and change of market share and most important, HD DVD Counter Defenses.

Go Blu Ray!

I'd be willing to bet that it was the other way around. Toshiba started a fire sale probably after receiving advanced word that Sony was ready to release the S300.

No, I got in on the last day of free shipping, but had to pay tax. I have a Samsung 56" DLP, 1080p tv, and i'm can't wait to see the picture! The reason I bought the tv was because that model was on display with the BDP-1 and looked amazing.

Is that x.v.color thing, what they call 'deep color'?

Sony calls this 'live color creation' right for their tv's, right? Or is live color creation a whole different thing?

Edit: do the sony XDR 1080p tv support x.v.color and/or deep color? And does it have HDMI 1.3?

This player was announced in February I think (it was in the winter), so we all knew it was coming for a while at $599. They may have gotten advanced word of the price cut. Also, I think part of the fire sale is to get rid of the HD-A2, since the newer generation players are now out. I think part of it is a clearance sale that all companies run when new models are coming out. However, slashing the price that much, and giving away all that free stuff, still shows the desperation.

i'd agree, i think they're pretty desperate, i saw an HD DVD player at costco, at first it was 350, then a week later it was 250. They're practicatlly giving them away, and yet blu-ray is ahead in sales
DVD Empire this week
70%blu-ray
30%-hd dvd

looks like things are still going blu

Some of us had been saying since the beginning of 2006 (when HD DVD announced $499 for their 1G players) that any CE company of the BDA could cut prices to "compete" if they felt the need to do so. The fact that they have not yet decided to compete with price parity, and still lead in disc sales week after week tells you how they feel about their prospects. HD DVD had the first to market advantage. I do truly feel that BD probably would not have launched until 2007 had it not been for HD DVD. All the BD companies did was make sure they didn't get too far behind before they were 100% ready. I wonder if the fact that they are ahead is actually where they thought they'd be (at this point in time)?

This is why I laugh when people like HPforMe and plazman over at AVMS make posts like BD supporters are nervous or the BDA is nervous. It's just so utterly ridiculous, and shows you how far gone some people are.

If Sony were smart, they'd stop at this one, and I wouldn't let that price fall down anymore. The cheapest they should go is another $100 bucks (and that's assuming at somepoint Toshiba starts really giving the hardware away). All Sony's efforts going forward should be on BD exclusive movie titles. The fact you can't really buy Jack Sheeeeite on HD DVD will makes it a tough player to market, never mind the price. Exclusive blockbuster titles and reasonably affordable (not cheap!) players, coupled with the growth in PS3s will no sooner put an end to the format war.

If HDMI 1.3 is on this thing out of the box, that makes this player at least 2 - 3 years future proof. Way to go Sony!
