Subtitles or Dubbed

Love to hear your views on this. Do you use the subtitles or prefer listening to your native tongue. My own personal view is to subtitle as this seems to have fewer mistakes. Haven't seen a dubbed film now in over ten years.

Good point, but do you not find it distracting when the words do not sinc up to the mouth movements

Subtitle without question. When you dub it, it just feels so cheesy and out of place which takes you out of the movie. Plus you loose the actual performance of the actors.

I do, but I generally find it more distracting if I miss some subtle body movement or something else because I was too busy reading what they said.

I typically stay away from foreign movies because I don't really like to do either one, but for me, dubbed is the lesser of two evils

I prefer subtiles. I watch a lot of anime & kung fu movies and I always prefer that listening to them in japanese or chinese with subtiles.

I don't watch either subtitled or dubbed movies often, but when I do I prefer subtitles. I get a headache from a movie when the words aren't in sync with the actors performance.

Old school Kung Fu films = Dubbed

I grew up with all the Godzilla films being dubbed on VHS so I watch them both dubbed and subbed.

Most other foreign films, SUBTITLED!

Personally I don't mind listening to the native tongue but with that being said subtitles kind of distract me while trying to watch the movie. It's just so much easier to listen to a dub that you can understand so you can actually see what's going on. Also, I usually have a hard time trying to keep up with the subtitles. If I am playing a video game or watching an anime or a cartoon that's when I always go with whatever language I want(85% of the time English) because either way it's a dub even the original Japanese version is still considered a dub. Live action I usually go more towards the native language more so.

Subtitles without a doubt. Switching to dubbed on movies takes away from it, especially on films that are more of a dramatic tone.

Subtitles! The dubbed versions always sound cheesy to me. Made the mistake of watching "Let the right one in" dubbed. That was some of the worst voice acting I have heard.

as I was reading the posts in this thread this is the movie I wanted to use as an example of what a difference a bad dubbing can make.

the blu I had started playing with the english dubbing on and after a few minutes I restarted it in it's original language with subs, made a huge difference. it changed the tone of the movie completely

For me it depends on the quality of the voice acting of the dubbed version. As mentioned, Let the Right One In was terrible. However, I thought they did a pretty decent job with Brotherhood of the Wolf. If the voice acting is good, then dubbed. If the voice acting is bad, then subbed.

Subtitled for movies, but I prefer my Anime dubbed. Sometimes they choose a color for the subtitle on Anime that blends in with the animation, thus making it hard to read. Most of the the foriegn movies I watch are older so the color of subtitles doesn't matter, because the films are usually black and white.
I do like it when the subtitles are part of the black bar below the actual film. Always thought that was a good idea for a TV screen, but would suck if you had a projector set up so the black bars did not appear on your screen.

Subtitles for all foreign films expect for Disney dubs of Ghibli films.

Subs all the way. A movie is a piece of art and the vocal talents being used and chosen by the director are a piece of that art, dubbing is a bastardization of film (or non native dubbing really) because it now takes away a piece of that art being that the director and casting director chose those actors and their voices for a reason.

Typically, subtitles. You get the intonation and the character exactly as the actor portrays it. A bad dub can lose the entire intent of the movie even when the dub actors read directly from the script. For an example of a bad dub, check out an old version of Akira. I refer to the Carl Macek dub. Children sound like adults and there is no real character projection in the voices, but rather a group of people sounding like they are reading a play in their high school english class.

There are some cases where dubs have been cool though. On Persepolis, the movie was originally written as a graphic novel and as a script in French for French audiences. When the movie was going to be released to the English speaking world, they kept the animation and re-produced and directed the soundtrack to be done professionally in English as well. It sounded really good and was well acted IMHO.
