Default Panasonic S1 50" Plasma...Exchanged for the G10 ,,,read why .

Hey just got the new S1 model, I really like it alot , have'nt had much time to play with it due to working , I know there is a few post on it , but I have couple of ? for any help.

1st ? is , Am I really losing going with the S1 verses the G10 with THX.

2nd ? . How do I set it to 1080P and 16 .9 ratio. in the menu?

I use to have the HP 42 " Plasma and in the menu I set it to 16.9 and I could set it to 1080P And I have the Marantz Blu-ray BD-8002 Player , I set the output to 1080P , I did watch the Fast & the Furious Toyko Drift the night I got it and it was a stunning Picture, But not really sure if it was displayed in 1080P.

Please any help , I would be greatful . Also did I do okay with getting this TV ? or should I've gotten the Samsung Plasma 58" for $2,000.00 or an LCD.

Thanks agian , have a nice day jeff

The THX mode on the G10 is below the quality of last year's models, so now you're not missing anything there.

Firstly, you don't "set" the TV to 1080p, your source determines the resolution. So, if you're watching a blu ray and have the player connected via HDMI or other 1080p connection, it will be 1080p. If you put a blu ray into your player and it was connected via a 1080p cable, it was displayed in 1080p.

Secondly, you can stretch the image in the picture menu if you want it to fill the whole screen, but if the movie or other source was recorded in a widescreen format, you will lose not only clarity and resolution but also pieces of the picture itself. So just pop your movie in and enjoy!

According to who? CNET? HD Guru says its very close to the industry standard for color reproduction... which I wouldnt say is poor quality by any means.

Several professional calibrators with the measurements to prove it. Here's one in particular: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...7#post16026547 Post 247.

By the way, I did not say that it was of poor quality. Maybe you should re-read my post, because what I said was that it was below the quality of the THX mode on last year's displays.

Ok i've got to agree with allstar here, you just posted a link to support your theory, but the guy that did that post said first thing that the blacks were crushed more on the G10 than they were on last years 800u, now i havn't done a side by side either but both cnet and hdguru said that black's and shadow detail were better on the G10 than on any of panny's last year model's including the 800u, i'm not trying to say you guy's bought a crapy set(you and sandman) the S1 seem's to be an incredible set, i've read the reviews and seen in store , but havn't really got to mess with one myself, but you are making comments and assumption's that have no real credibility, meaning you don't own the G10, i know there's a lot of back and forth on the avs forum's, which is why i usually try to go to pro sites like hdguru, cnet, hometheatermag and other's to get reviews they try to be as unbiased as possible, so it's a bit irresponsible of you to make claim's that you have no personal knowledge of, oh and viewing in the store doesn't count everyone know's this........THX really is a great mode, i use for everything, including daytime watching, but all this nonsense aside i think sandman made a great choice i don't think your going to be dissapointed, the s1 is a great set according to reviews, and i did like what i saw in store but that really isn't a way to judge a set.........Oh and your default should be 1080p, you shouldn't have to set this on the tv, it will automatically adjust to the incoming signal, CONGRATS ON THE NEW SET SANMAN.....

In arguing with me in your excessively long paragraph, you supported my point. On a side note, if you would like your post to be read easily, take advantage of the english classes you took in high school and seperate your ideas into paragraphs.

Anyway, as you read, the G10's blacks were crushed more than on the 800u!! This is in reference to THX mode! He goes on to compare gamma and greyscale measurements between the two with similar findings. Now, it would seem that he is proving through data that the G10's THX mode just isn't as good as last year's.

I would like to point out that I'm not bashing the G10 by any means, the guy asked if he was missing anything by opting for the S1 and I'm simply trying to alleviate his concerns.

You are the second person to comment on my poor grammer, I really do suck at writing in general, i just get to thinking and forget so seperate , you may also notice my spelling sucks as well, never could spell for sh**, but my point was i do not agree with the black crush, and i stated that by mentioning the pro reviews at other sites that also claim the G10's superiority in black's and shadow detail, and i may have been a bit harsh about the reply , i wasn't trying to be, if so my appologies, just trying to inform and stay informed as much as possible........

The G10 absolutely has better blacks than last year's models, that is not the point i am arguing. You seem to be under the impression that i am comparing the G10 to the 800u; I am not. When the G10 is in custom mode, black crush is virtually non existent. Again, remember that I am talking about THX mode. The different picture modes will each have different greyscale, gamma, black level, etc readings, and unfortunately it seems that somehow the G10's THX mode was not successful in surpassing the 800u's.

i don't know how to set the image to 16:9 in the menu but if you just hit "format" on your remote, you can cycle through the different display formats in which 16:9 is one of the options.

I have to agree that the G10 crushes a bit. The store may not be the ideal place to compare TV's, but being that the G10 and 800u were side by side in the store I viewed them at I could easily see the difference. I set both TV's to THX mode and the difference was very apparent. The G10 had better blacks which was clearly noticeable, but the 800u definitely had more detail. On top of that there was definitely a color accuracy issue with the G10. It had a greenish yellow tint that bothered me quite a bit. From what I understand from reading the avsforum threads the G10 needs to be calibrated in the service menu to get an ideal picture.

Thanks for the reply, i spent two hours at Best Buy this morning looking at the G10, talking to a friend who works there , He has the 800U and another that just bought the G10. And really after talking and looking , the only thing Im getting for the difference is the THX mode, I will not use the Vcast thing, And My guy said he like the THX mode on his 800U better than the G10, I think it was really dark , all in all , the price difference was $300.00 , but hed drop off a $100.00 more so for $200.00 more I could get the THX, I really thought about it and I cant really justify it , as both guys had to agree too, So I guess I will keep the S1 for a while. thanks for the info on setting it up, as per the 16:9 and the 1080 P settting , I was worried I was missing it somewhere,LOL, The picture is stunnung looking so I'll be keeping the S1 for the price I payed , it was a steal, Plus I got tripple reward points too & sold my HP Plasma which payed for half of the S1, I willplay this weekend and report back , have some new movies to play , thanks agian to all, jeff

So I'd just like to say that with the Pluge patterns and grayscale patterns on the DVE disc the THX mode is anything but crushing the blacks (on my set, in my viewing environment) and that I actually knocked the settings down quite a bit to get to the point where the "below video black" bars of the pluge were still visible but not super dark in comparison to video black.

I think you made a fine decision and you'll be very happy with the set. The differences between those sets is pretty negligible when the THX mode is excluded. You may want to go over to the owner's thread at avsforum for some calibration settings. Enjoy the Panny!
