Default Proberly a really dumb question but need help

Hi

this is no doubt a really doubt question but im really new to all of this so please bare with me

Right im now the proud owner of a Sony BDP S300 or "tank" for short

now on all my past DVD players i connected my 5.1 speakers using the red, white and yellow cables and the sound has always been great.

today i recieved Band of Brothers on blu ray so naturally i decided to connect my 5.1 set up to the BD player. When i went to connect my set up to the player i noticed i just didnt have enough wires because as well as the red, white and yellow there was a black too these are for the woofer etc. I tried watching band of brothers anyway and while i could hear all the action i couldnt hear certain people talking on screen.

now since iv never had this problem before what do i need to do to get the full 5.1? do i need a cable that has red, white, yellow and black on it?

Your best option is to get either an HDMI cable, if your receiver has an HDMI input or a digital optical cable is the next best alternative. Kind of hard to give advice with out knoing what kind of receiver your using.

You should be connecting 5 RCA cables from the player to your receiver or amplifier. It sounds to me like you either didn't connect the outputs to the correct inputs or you were trying to connect your speakers directly to the player?

If he uses the 5.1 audio pre-outs, he can get decoded Dolby TrueHD, although DTS-HD MA would still be beyond that player.

You need 6 rca cables from the player's 5.1 audio output into your receivers 5.1 audio inputs. If you could give us some information on your receiver, we could perhaps provide more accurate information.

What are you refering to when you say reciever?. my 5.1 speakers etc i have had for a good while now and can either put out 2.1 or 5.1. a red and white cable is connected to the back of the subwoofer and at the other end of that cable is the red, white and yellow connections. At the back of the BDP s300 it has R. white red and black and L. red, white and black...now ive never used black cables in order to connect my 5.1 system to any DVD player in the past so im a little lost as to why on the S300 it has them

my tv is connected to the BD player via HDMI cable

you're using composite cables? there is no way to get 5.1 using the red, white and yellow cables (more specifically the red and white). as mentioned by others, you will need and hdmi or optical...unless you have analog inputs. the reason you're missing out on sound is because you don't have real 5.1 audio...just stereo sound coming out of 5.1 speakers.

it sounds like he is saying on his old dvd player, he use to connect his speakers directly to the stereo outputs and to the composite video output to either his tv or to his receiver (which he doesn't name the brand) it also sounds like he got a blu ray player and it has the 5.1 analog out and he wants to know how to connect to it. you either have to have 5.1 on the other end of what you want to play your sound or you can just connect your red & white cable into the stereo L & R jacks and the yellow into the lone yellow composite video out. if you have a receiver that has 5.1 analog input for audio then you need to have a total of 6 rca jacks to go from player to receiver. then you need one cable for video, based on the highest level of video either your receiver or your tv will accept, yellow, composite, svhs, component red/green/blue, or hdmi or dvi. make sure your not connecting to the rca jack that says digital coax, it should be next to the optical out. however, if your receiver supports optical or digital audio in, then you will only need one cable to get your audio. when using anything other than hdmi, you will not be able to get lossless audio (DTHD or DTS-HD-MA) only the core audio (DD or DTS) hope this helps, remember, when posting always list your components by brand and model so we can be of more direct help and not take turns guessing; it makes things go quicker.

The receiver is the thing you plug your 5.1 speakers into. If it has an HDMI input, try that. Otherwise just use two sets of Yellow, red, and white cables and plug them from your BD players 5.1 out into your receivers 5.1 in. It doesn't matter if it's black, just make sure each cable is going into the same spot from BD to receiver. ie. center to center, etc.

Huh...how about listing all the equipment you have. We can then go from there and what to do...what would be your best way to set it up...troubleshoot problems.

We still need to to know all the equipment you have to know what is going on. It soundls like you are missing the center channel if you can't hear any dialog. Can you take a picture of your setup and post it? I don't understand how you can plug the speakers directly into the blu-ray player so what are they plugged into?

Ok. I doubt the DURABRAND has analog ins so forget the 5 ch output connections. I would connect an optical cable from the receiver to the blu-ray player and use that to get 5.1 sound. You won't be able to get the HD tracks until you upgrade the receiver.

Or you could also just connect the digital coax from the receiver to the blu-ray player.

Right heres a picture of the front an back of my 5.1 system. Dont need a pic of my BD player as another poster has already kindly provided us with one

now as you can see there are 2 wires in the back of this red and white...on the other end of these wires there is red, white and yellow connections...iv tried each and everyway to connect these to the back of the BD player and i still have no sound in certain parts of band of brothers. I can hear the music and the action but no talking, yet when i unplug the 5.1 altogether and just watch the BD through the TV i can hear everything

Thats correct yes i wont be getting any sound from the centre because i have nothing plugged into the black connections in the back of the BD player.

It doesn't look to have optical or digital coax. I don't see any way to connect true 5.1 sound. My only guess is it somehow will matrix two channel out to 5.1. You really need to upgrade to a better AVR/speaker set when money allows. There are a few home theaters in a box out there at a decent price that would give you true 5.1 sound.
