Am I the only one out there that actually really cares about whether games support native 720p vs 1080i/p?
Am I the only one that feels little less enthus'd when reading game specs as only supporting 720p or hearing its actually sub720? In this age of high definition, I have noticed the following. Gamers do not care about higher resolutions than their television. Top of the pyramid: People with 1080p displays Middle top: People with 1080i displays Middle bottom: People with 720p displays Bottom: People running 480p/i displays Being at the top stinks, especially with games that spoil you like WipEout / Monsters / Eden / Stardust / Sigma / GTP. It blows knowing native 1080p resolutions will be pretty much ignored by cross-platform developers in this generation. |

It is a bit disappointing that consoles still do not run most 1080p games smoothly when PCs have hit that resolution for like 10 years now. Hopefully the next gen will be able to do it. Prices on graphics cards have come way way down. Fortunately, though, advancements in physics and other things have made it worth it. It's certainly still a MASSIVE step up from the previous Standard Definition gen.

i would rather a game be at a resolution that will still let it play well rather than be a resolution that will hamper it's performance.
GT5 is in 1080p, because of this it will run at just 30fps, which is still good but if it were at 720p it would run at 60fps. I would rather have the bump in performance than the bump in resolution. |

I'd rather see higher detail at 720p than lower detail with higher clarity at 1080p. WipEout HD and GT5/P are impressive but I'm sure I'd be more impressed if they squeezed everything out at 720p fixed. |

Whenever playing 720 games it basically expands the resolution to by 1080 screen and everything becomes more blurry as a result. |

Uncharted 2's glorious high res textures, depth of field, motion blurring and so on? Dream on at native 1080p. |

A couple years back 360 was also advertising that all games had AA and they removed that via firmware when everything started to go RROD. It was supposedly a fix to combat E74.

Don't believe the RROD bit for a second, and certainly no game with AA suddenly had it deactivated. |

Hmm interesting FWIW this is what people on the official XBOX forums were saying at the time I was investigating buying a 360. There was a pretty long thread of people saying games that had AA no longer had it after a firmware patch and speculating it was done to reduce RROD. I don't own a 360 personally so this isnt first hand info.

oh yeah, of course. I really didnt know if sony had anything like this. but for M$ I think it was purely cosmetic to make consumers think it was a req, but it was never really enforced. even Halo 3 was sub HD. i think they just figured it was time to end the charade lol

EDIT - http://www.neoseeker.com/news/11698-...n-requirement/ I'd like to see games reach 1080p with full detail but I don't know if this gen can manage it. For now 720 is okay with me, they still look great. |

With everything that is said, I guess my only comfort would be to go back to computer gaming. Haven't been back since pre PS3's release. Do people still use computer monitors nowadays for computer gaming? Or is everything through the TV? Don't have room for a computer, let alone a workstation with a nice 24". |

As for the other console, while it may be true that that's no longer required, per se, that doesn't mean that it isn't still recommended, and it's not like devs will stop doing it all of a sudden. |

Well I can't speak for other people but since newer graphic cards support either DVI-D or HDMI a lot of people switched to their HDTVs since most people who can afford a higher end computer have HDTVs anyway.
