Default Will Blu-ray be able to have a higher resolution years down the line?

Please excuse my ignorance, but is 1080p the maximum resolution that the BD format will go? I heard they were working on 1440p and I'm sure it's way down the line, but can BD expand to a higher res? Also has anyone heard of any advancements in 1440p?

1080 x 1920 is the maximum resolution of the ATSC standard adopted by the FCC on Dec. 24, 1996.

TV set makers have only been able to match this resolution in the past few years.
To take advantage of higher resolution would require a TV able to display a higher resolution, and what standard would the industry agree upon without a government mandate?
This industry cannot even agree upon a HD disc format.

I'm sure one day we'll all have wall screens with ultra high definition but for the moment getting people to adopt HD at all is the name of the game.

You would have to have Wolverine type eye sight to be able to tell the difference. The human eye can barely tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on a 46" screen. There is a point where massively high resolutions like 1440p is just over kill and unnecessary.

blu-ray movies are pretty bright in picture right now that if they became a higher resolution you might go blind especially with some of these movies that were shot in from a really good camera but 1440p picture you may need glasses especially when it shows the sun it will be like being right next to the sun
