The first time, I didn't really care for it at all, but 2049 was so dang good that I showed the original to two friends, separately (the other two viewings), in order to then take them to see 2049.

Each successive time I see the original, I like it a bit more. But, honestly, I don't love it like I love 2049, which is now in my top ten films. I'd describe the original BR as "good, and CERTAINLY worth watching in order to get to 2049."

You can't understand the words "Blade Runner"?

... Or, you *gasp* *shock* learn the language.

Are you afraid that the retailer will send you a special copy that says "slimdude is dumb" on it in Japanese and all of your Japanese-speaking friends will secretly laugh at your expense?

More coming from how one might feel about a film that one saw in the theater in 1982 and many times since over the years and then a sequel comes along compared to someone younger (in your case much younger) and how you might feel about it. Although it might have nothing to do with it ,I believe that it probably will influence how one might perceive the two films.

I really like Blade Runner 2049 but find it to be a little flat and perhaps too long for some reason but my bias makes Blade Runner a superior almost perfect film.

The original Blu was beautiful in it's time, and upscaled gorgeously on my set up. As far as I'm concerned, only recently has it become somewhat of an eye sore, and I believe that's due to the new onslaught of 4K uhds, and now being able to see at much higher resolution, hdr, etc, and probably a little to do with the antiquated VC-1 as well. If the film was given a new pressing with some AVC action, people who haven't upgraded to 4K could at least upgrade the Blu, as I'm sure the compression upgrade would help quite a bit.

For me, the original Blade Runner isn't so much about the plot or the substance. The movie grew on me over time because of its historical significance. Blade Runner is the original genre-defining Cyberpunk movie. So many modern works are based upon its original aesthetic. Those rainy streets and neon signs. Homogenized Asian cultural domination. That swanky Jazz lounge saxophone reflective music after the killshot in the back. It's visceral violence juxtaposed against the will to live.

Cyberpunk is it's own genre now and this film defined many of its perimeters. It's dystopian futurism and artificial intelligence under the backdrop of technology and societal oppression. The tales are also told in noire fashion. Many of our modern films and video games are owed entirely to Blade Runner. In my opinion, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is also the best anime of all time. It's an even deeper dive into all of these elements. What does it mean to be human? and what is our place in this crummy world?

VC-1 can yield excellent results when given a decent bitrate to work with - ie, the Buena Vista encode of Starship Troopers which is still a reference-quality BD. Blade Runner on the other hand was a typical Warners crunch-job that was bit-starved in order to fit onto HD-DVD (and a BD-25 in the US, the European version is a BD-50 but it's something like 33GB, the only difference being that it has a bunch of extra dubbed audio streams).

Is it true that they added new sound effects for this 4K release? I read somewhere that it has different sound effects from the regular blu-ray?!

As much as I dearly love 2049, I do think the film could have done with some trimming here and there, particularly in the middle and final act. Could have probably lopped 5-10 minutes without losing much from the final product. Much of the sequence when K finds
[Show spoiler]Deckard in Las Vegas, that whole bit where he is walking around for 3-5 minutes, in my mind could have been shorter (for example).

My new TV arrived this morning, so I'll be breaking my 4K cherry later courtesy of Sir Riddles' masterpiece.

That's classic Blade Runnner. It perfectly mirrors "Deckard enter the Bradbury".

Wait until you see Rachel blow smoke with a bright backlight before she takes her test... glorious.

Fair enough. Different stroked for different folks, as they say. Either way, Blade Runner is a historically significant film and one I have great respect for, even if it isn't my personal favorite. Glad everyone else can love it, though
