My experience, too (although not as much as STAR WARS--inexplicably, every woman I've ever met really seems utterly bumfuddled by SW). DOCTOR WHO sucks so, so hard, though. Women of the world, defend yourself!

I don't think most audiences can handle movies like this anymore. They've gotten used to the spoon-fed super-tightly-woven hyper-focused plot, with spelled-out subplots now substituting for layers and nuance.
You can't judge all films these days based on the "top 10" currently streaming or playing list. The stuff we get in theatres are of course more suited these days to general audiences and are often dumbed down, but there are still lots of films that offer something more. Sadly those don't get as much attention, so you have to work a bit harder at finding them.

As pointed out previously, every time a studio does release something a bit different, or mentally stimulating, it flops, so you can't blame the studios for releasing what sells tickets.

I saw i when I was 8 with my dad. It looks more like a PG-13 movie to me (if such a rating had existed at the time).

I was always more disturbed by films like "Old Yeller" as a child. Blade Runner didn't bother me.

And this was honestly always the case. Blade Runner bombed when it came out and was not popular. Who's to say something like Ex Machina won't be considered a classic 30 years from now once more and more people have seen it? Wouldn't surprise me at all.

There was very little nudity in the film. So let's not forget it.

The (US) theatrical cut cuts away from this moment and everything happens off screen. The nudity isn't really excessive either and there's little to no actual attention to the nudity. So, yeah. I'd say PG-13 should be more than doable.

This whole "all these 80's R rated movies would be PG-13 today" attitude just baffles me. Today's PG-13 is so sanitized of blood and nudity that a ton of old PG movies would have a hard time getting a PG-13 today, let alone the R ones. Even putting aside blood and nipples you've got the dark tone and mature themes, which the MPAA also cares about. No way Blade Runner gets a PG-13 today. Nooooo waaaaaay.

The nudity is so mild. I would say that Blade Runner today would rate a very soft "R", so it wouldn't change. This is a film that is not exactly going to freak out most kids. The violence is not that graphic and there is very little nudity.

It doesn't matter how mild the nudity is. It's still nudity. Nude is nude. That's like walking outside when it's raining a little bit and saying it's just mildly raining.

Kramer vs Kramer has a nude scene yet it’s rated PG.

Sprinkling. Raining. You say either and I say either. Let's call the whole thing off.

PG-13 has kind of lost it's original point-- it's kind of become what "PG" used to be, and is just pretty much anything that's not straight-up "G" or "R". Is there anything coming out that's rated "PG" anymore? Maybe some of the Pixar movies that's just a hair over the "G" category.

As for Blade Runner being PG-13? I don't think so, but if it was coming out today, I could see the studio mandating a few more trims here and there to get it there (like the U.S theatrical cut but a bit more so).

The fear of nudity in the US is really weird. So is the taboo of the sexualization of young persons. Like, we're gonna show it in movies and shows but then not talk about it. It's all especially strange when you consider how many people dress provocatively and the raunchy programs that air on basic network television during prime time.

We're going to blow people away several times an episode in every cop drama but don't you dare say a thing about that girl in a skirt.

It's all very strange.
