K wasn’t happy to die and Batty wasn’t clutching to life or dreading termination in the rain.

Edit: Batty wasn’t clutching to life…

I thought Leto nailed the performance the movie required. He was literally so big that he believed himself the saviour of mankind, and he plays that massiah-esq role perfectly imo. He speaks at people rather than conversing with them and that is something that people who believe they are more important than anyone else tend to do. I thought he played the role perfectly.

Batty just wanted to go out on his own terms. He certainly didn't dread expiring, as he so beautifully demonstrated when it was 'time to die'.

What's this about then? He's just chilling out?

Anyway is there a hidden subtext in these sequences I've never heard?

Are Roy's actions really saying there is a hidden social commentary? Is that commentary...

That the creators and those in "true" power are the real evil in this world. But the Runners and Blade Runners are like two people virtually the same at glance but have 1 tiny thing different like skin color or coming from a different culture/tribe?

We should not kill ourselves because like Tyrel he was the evil one in power, not the runners and blade runners they're blindly taking orders without a real thought? Symbolically this subtext is shaming racism and those in true power who do nothing but watch sit back and profit off of society at War like Tyrel?

All the moments lost in time are a reference to those murdered by culture wars? Never challenging those in power. Only Batty challenges the person in "power". Deckard is the blind robot killing those in true "power". Yet actually a human being.

Maybe I want to look at it this way and like the movie more than just robots with a short lifespan in case they evolved into a criminal or threat to those in power, it's nothing like this? Or this is the main theme of Blade Runner?

Was for the other fellow - thought your statement supported Leto’s performance. But in any event, there is a very good chance that what Villeneuve wanted is in the movie…

Seeing Blade Runner 2049, with the anticipation of wondering what the story will be, having no idea what to expect (especially in terms of filmatism, having never seen Villeneuve's work) in a large cinema, was an experience like no other, an experience I will cherish as long as my memory functions. For me, truly transcendent. Seeing 2001 on 70mm in.. 2001.. was similar.

I think Villeneuve just wanted a rock star, since his initial pick was David Bowie who wasn’t available (because he was dying).

I always intentionally spell him really badly, because I'm not gonna be assed to look up the spelling of a director's name whose work I'm so-so on.

If you never look it up, how do you know your intentional misspellings are (in)correct?

And, that should prove how much I don't care about his filmography.

No, not chilling, of course, but he was not scared of dying imo. He just wanted, as I said above, to die on his terms. Not because someone else decided his time was up.

Of all the people in the movie Batty has the most humanity, so I would say it is a commentary, the script at least. the most violent has the closest relationship to life. A strange paradox but it works. Tyrell seems a nice chap, but he lacks the empathy and humanity to make him a good person. Deckard learns to be a better man, but only through Batty and Rachel.

Oh my! That would have been fantastic, that would have made the film a masterpiece for me. Bowie should have been in film way more, his performance as Tesla was a treat, but honestly he was great in everything. Labyrinth would have to my favorite of his.

Leto always takes me out of film when he is on screen because I can tell he is acting. Christian Bale is another that I have this problem with.

Being more specific about the UHD itself as well I would say that does make the higher grain not out of character as well, drawing attention to the fact that yes this is a film thats referencing older films.

Really as well I suspect its Scott going back to one of the big influences in "Sci fi romantic clutter" as well in Tarkovskys Solaris being a story thats flooded with nostalgia, its not just the film playing on the audiences experience of older cinema but also that playing into the characters state.

I suspect actually part of the reason why BR2049 has been very well liked is that it pulls in multiple directions. You have some of the more low key drama of the original but mixed in with larger scale action thriller stuff which many probably always wanted but didnt get from the original.

Personally speaking I actually think the K/Joi story was the best part of the film, that was a very interesting dyanmic(even if it lifted elements from films like Her) having a slave own a slave. I think I would have actually preffered a smaller scale story focused on that, scale back the plot to something relatively simple that you could play that story out against.

That said really I think whilst 2049 is a little messy it does manage to hold together well and I think its DV's best film by some way.

2049 just felt like it had some BR trappings applied. It’s way too long, had little Hampton Fancher and no David Peeples involvement, no Scott and so it really isn’t in the same universe. You do get a sort of version of BR’s orignal farmhouse opening and if Ford hadn’t appeared I wouldn’t ever think of it again.
I really hated the story they came up with for what happened after the original in their version.
The one great scene for me and one that was emotional, profound, pure sci-fi and I think supposedly from Fancher was the
[Show spoiler]scene where Joi tried to finally physically connect with K and has to use a physical stand-in.
