I Own the single disc umbrella edition that I purchased through Barnes and noble, who uses same distributor as many listed here. I can confirm it is region free. Says so on the package and plays in my region A player just fine.

Sometimes a disc being region free doesn't always help if it's from a PAL territory as it may have some 50Hz content which will befuddle many US players (OPPO braggarts need not apply ).

Thankfully the Umbrella disc uses 1080p24 for the copyright logo, Umbrella logo and the main menu (as well as the main movie, natch) so it'll play just fine on an American machine. There is some 50Hz content on the disc however, as the 'Dead will Walk' documentary and the trailers are all at 50Hz, while the Aussie-exclusive interview with Romero is, ironically enough, encoded at 60Hz.

Worth noting a lot of reviewers preferred the Anchor Bay disc, so it really comes down to personal preference. The AB disc is out of print of course, but can still be had in the $20-30 range pretty easily on ebay. It would have the documentary in NTSC format.

It really comes down to which caps you think look better and how much you're willing to spend. And while both discs have flaws they still both look much nicer than the DVD, which always looked terrible, according to most reviews.

Funny thing is, with everyone buying up all these versions you just know they're gonna announce a remastered edition any day now.

I got it not long ago for $27. Cheapest one today seems to be $29. I have seen them go for as low as $24 or so. Depends on when you look. All of those are cheaper than a Twilight Time release.

If you want the new release announced I'll go buy the Japanese box set of Dawn of the Dead. I have the worst luck with buying discs and immediately following is the announcement for an American release. Now I'm tempted. I wonder where I can find the Japanese box set for the cheapest? Fear not everyone, once I pull the trigger it'll get announced!

I'm tempted to sell my US Blu and get the Umbrella Blu. Apart from the "fast film facts", is there anything on the US BD that isn't on the ultimate edition DVD (which I'm hanging onto!)

Hey speaking of the Dead films, I finally got Day and Land of the Dead last week, had Dawn a while before that, and have Night coming in the mail from Japan. My question: how do you guys file these on the shelf? I am thinking of putting them all under "Dead" or "Romero" but maybe they should go under Night of the Living Dead and then its sequels. I dunno!

I just put them in order from Night onwards, and I don't have any sort of alphabetised layout so that's about as regimented as my collection gets.

Watched the Umbrella disc earlier BTW, I've gotta reiterate how much I love this film. One of my all-time favourites. Aside from the smearing the PQ holds up really well with deep blacks and robust colour. It's a shame it doesn't come with the mono audio (the PCM 2.0 is a downmix) but as the remix isn't terribly offensive it'll do for now.

That's what I would do, and will once I own them. I sort my collection alphabetically for the most part, but I always put sequels next to their predecessors even if the title begins with a different letter/word.

CDJapan.co.jp has it for a little over $100 shipped; Amazon.jp has it in the mid $90s.

Ordered the Aussie Blu from Deep Discount for $12. I want to have a Blu copy handy for Halloween time and I know it's got to look better than the Ultimate Edition DVD.

Even if they announce a new release tomorrow, I won't be too upset.

I'll add that info to my downmix thread.

I dont think I knew Deep Discount carried many import titles. Good price. I may have to jump on that too, until a good box set/one with extensive special features comes out.

This piqued my curiosity, so I had to check out DVD->Bluray comparisons...if the Umbrella looks the same as the Arrow, it's amazingly close considering how night and day it usually is when you blow a DVD up to 1920x1080 and look at it next to the bluray!!

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ess=#vergleich

Does the movie just plain not have much extra detail that existed on the film, or are the bluray transfers just severely outdated?! There's very little increase in readability on the badge, or the carpet detail on the wall, etc. I mean, the bluray is obviously more detailed, it's immediately clear there's more detail, but I'm pretty stunned at how little more there is.
