Remember, even on the original 70mm 6-channel mag, the surround was mono. Splitting that out into 5.1 and 7.1 is going to change a lot all by itself. These films sounded totally different in 70mm 6-track mag than they did in 35mm Dolby Surround not just because there was no baby boom in the 35mm version, but because of the more limited frequency response and higher distortion in optical analog sound. And the mono optical, which still would have used the Academy Curve, which started rolling off at 2KHz, would have sounded even more different.

When they were still working with film, a lot of material was premixed. Those relative levels shouldn't change if they're still using those premixes. But they may have gone back and taken all (or some of) the original stems and plugged those into ProTools or whatever they were using and once you do that, with hundreds of source tracks, there is no way you're replicating the original exactly, even if you wanted to.

And then along the way, you're remixing and you mix in a way that sounds best to you now or you correct things you know were wrong. You may occasionally reference the original, but you don't obsess over every fraction of as a second.

Listen to Beatles recordings. Audio music recordings, especially back then, were far less sophisticated than film mixes (Sgt. Pepper was accomplished on a 4-tk), but the mono and stereo mixes are remarkably different and there are obvious differences even between the British and U.S. releases.
Well, yeah. But these aren't exceptional circumstances, these are things that mixers have to deal with every day, and most of 'em tend to get this stuff right. I'd expect no less from a company whose former owner prided himself on wanting to make the theatrical and home cinema experiences as good and as accurate as they could possibly be - only what's the point of going to all that trouble with THX etc. when LFL's own sound techs can't get the underlying mix right to begin with?

The Force fanfare should never have been dialled down. Vader's breathing should not have been omitted. The dialogue should never have been as uneven as it was on the DVD mix. And they should never have flopped the music in the rear channels either, done as it was to create a fake surround reverb for music that wasn't matrixed to begin with. They're rookie mistakes, which people are welcome to follow the party line and accept as "deliberate creative decisions", or perhaps chalk them up as byproducts of befuddled minds. I'm not so generous on either count, not when we're dealing with one of the biggest films of all time.

Most of those things were fixed for the Blu-ray, granted, but LFL have had enough goddamned practice with this movie on home video and they STILL can't get the audio right re: the missing breathing.

After a hectic day in the garden I only had time for one of the films.. So here I am enjoying Attack of the Clones of course.

I'll take aggressive negotiations over a diplomatic solution any day

Happy Fourth everyone

Watching Attack of the Clones now. Watched Phantom Menace earlier. Will probably watch revenge of the Sith tonight too. My fiancé had never seen II/III, so it's interesting to see her watch it for the first time.

Nice. I watched the prequels yesterday, I'm on Empire right now.

It sounded similarly on DVD. I think they tried to overcompensate for how hot the AOTC mix was, especially with its focus on louder sound effects over music. Ultimately, I think the ROTS mix sounds more balanced and a lot like the mixes for Episodes 4-6.

Surprisingly?

Granted, it's been over thirty years but I don't remember being too terribly surprised.

It would appear that, at some point today, Amazon has dropped the boxed set price to $79.99 (same as Best Buy). https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-...Blu-ray/14903/ If it's like the others, it will be on sale through/until the 11th.

Since I have not owned Star Wars since back in the day when I had the 3 on laserdisc (IV & V were sped up 3% to fit into 2 hours), I will be picking up the complete saga later this week, as, it appears I'll miss out on the bonus material if I were to just pick up the trilogies.

I just wish it included the original bar scenes, it's been a while, but what I saw when watching the DVDs, was not good at all (they changed the music? ...the music sucked, and they CGI changed the band?). The star wars theme disco remix made #1 on the billboard singles chart for 2 weeks in a row. I used to own the 45rpm single...wish I still had it. (here's the full version:
)

But, it'll be great to see it as it was in the theater instead of SD/NTSC. I saw Star Wars (the first movie, episode IV) with my dad back when it was originally in the theater, and I'll never forget that big ship in the opening scene...the movie was unlike anything before it, and any and all special effects movies would not be what they are today without it.

Has anyone watched the saga in the machete order? I just found out about it on this week's episode The Big Bang Theory. It sounds cool, I want to try it. I'd totally recommend it for anyone who's never seen Star Wars before. But I wouldn't exclude Episode I.

I'd never heard of this, but would probably exclude Episode I as suggested by this blogger.

I love the idea of watching V, II, III, VI makes perfect sense.
