If you are thinking UHD BD, it wound be a great incentive for fans to upgrade their TV's to 4k as long as there is a UHD player, I know I would.

While it would be nice, SQ has never (at least as far as I can remember) been used as initial offerings. Not sure Disney wants to change that as it just drives up fan talk\demand for the movies. Time will tell though, unfortunately only 4-9 would really be able to get any benefit from UHDBD as Eps 1-3 I think are all locked to 2k.

It's also something Kershner himself always wanted and would have had he the recourses. My ideal version of Empire is the Theatrical release, cleaned up and perfectly restored, and exactly the same except for the Cloud City stuff.
The problem with the Cloud City changes is they don't do them completely, and they forget where they've added them. They create a few continuity errors. You can spot one when Han shoots Darth Vader, when they enter the dining room the walk past a new effect with an outside elevator, but when we look back, the old two-panel stained-glass is behind them.

Well.......even though Phantom Menace was mostly shot on film, every scene but one had some form of digital manipulation so it was technically finished at 2K (the Blu-ray was derived from the 2K master files).

And I'd be VERY surprised if TFA was mastered in 4K to go along with the 3D finish. Disney aren't down with 4K finishes in general.

So it's pretty much only the original trilogy that could really benefit from the increased spatial resolution of UHD BD, although every single one would look better if they were remastered with the higher bit depth and wider colour gamut of UHD BD, even at 'only' 2K.

Excellent work. Are you making covers for the bonus discs found in the Complete Saga set?

I actually held out getting the Blu-ray Saga set in the hopes of the unaltered original trilogy, until a year ago, when I caved and got the set.

Even with the modifications Mr. Lucas has made in 1997 and onwards, the movies are still fantastic, fun adventures, and still look at sound great to my eyes and ears.

I have no regrets at upgrading, and trading in my DVDs (with the exception of the OT bonus disc, which I kept. Love "Empire of Dreams").

The way I figure it, this set is George Lucas' say on what the movies should be.

If Disney do restore and release the UOT (and I suspect they will), that will be History's say.

I will likely alternate between the two versions of the movies as the mood takes me. UOT for the nostalgia and film history, and the Saga Blu-rays for the cool parts added later (yes, I feel some are cool and do work, though other changes clearly don't).

If both History and George Lucas can have their say, I'm happy with both.

Yes, I would at least buy the player, and upgrade the TV when I had the funds and/or my old one died.

Can you remember the guy on avs that had 35mm scans of Clones?

And with the imax sections we may get a 4k di on the 35mm sections to aid dmr

Yeah The Phantom Menace was shot in 35mm anamorphic on Kodak 320T. One scene was shot on an HDW-750 (or 700) HDCAM at 60i as a test.

Attack of the Clones was shot on the 24P HDW-F900. They used the onboard HDCAM (3:1:1 1440x1080) deck for most of the shoot but later, ILM recorded HD-SDI out (10-bit 4:2:2) to a data recorder for additional efx shots, chroma key work, miniatures, etc.

Revenge of the Sith was shot with the 24p HDC-F950. Recorded to HDCAM SR (4:4:4 1920x1080).

The D.I's were all done at 2K.

Probably. TDKR's 15/70 IMAX version had the 35mm stuff transferred at 6K from a timed IP, however that's purely an in-house procedure and it wasn't for the archival mastering of the movie in general.

But between Nolan's soft photography and the heavier DMR 35mm processing I've seen on other 15/70 flicks, 35mm generally tends to come up short when it's transferred to this particular large format IMO, no matter how many K's are involved.

A 2K digital projection on the same giant screen looks surprisingly great, but 35mm DMR = meh. I think the best example of DMR'd 35mm stuff I've seen was on Catching Fire, that looked really nice throughout (incidentally, CF's DP Jo Willems wasn't convinced by TDKR's 35mm scenes in IMAX, he said the grain was the size of golf balls ). [edit] Titanic 3D looked great as well, but the embiggened 1.78 framing and pin-sharp 4K remaster certainly helped it along.

I think the nearest analogue to TFA will be be JJ's own Star Trek Into Darkness, also shot on 35mm anamorphic and 65mm IMAX. What happens in the IMAX DMR stays in the IMAX DMR, resolution wise, and the 2D and 3D digital deliverables of STID were steadfastly 2K. I just can't see Disney doing anything differently (see also: the Marvel movies).

Yup. John Knoll said they actually shot in Rec.709 on Clones, as opposed to the standard 8-bit log curve that they were using at that time for their digital work. He doesn't say why, just that after "many revisions" they went with the pre-loaded .709 and it worked out "reasonably well". (The recorded image also had an unavoidable RGB-YUV conversion which they had to convert back to RGB). So there goes my bit about a UHD BD 2K version of Clones potentially having a wider colour space!

But by Sith they'd nailed it, shooting 12-bit 4:4:4 as you say, and it shows even on the Blu-rays with the third movie looking rather spiffy compared to the soft, soft, soft Clones.

It's been announced the George Lucas will kick-off the Tribeca Talks series at the Tribeca film festival on April 17th.
Usually those "talks" revolve around a recent release for the person being invited.
And the "opening ceremonies" at the Star Wars Convention are happening the day before.

Gee...I can't imagine what's going to happen there.
