If it's just the yub nub celebration (which I've always preferred, being old and set in my ways), then one can imagine strong arms of the Empire still festering and remaining a powerful faction; one that can believably evolve into the First Order. It's a "smaller" victory, if it's just on Endor. But if the whole universe is instantly celebrating and tearing down statues, then I've got to wonder: "where the hell did the First Order get enough power and capital to build a larger-than-death-star weapon, even over the course of thirty years??"

I'm of the rare opinion of liking both endings of ROTJ.

If you're just talking about The Holy Trilogy, then the Yub Nub ending is perfect as it's our small group of friends celebrating with a new ally. They met under crazy circumstances but they became the best of friends and pulled off an amazing feat.

If you're talking about the saga (I used to say this even when it was just 6 films), then the multiple celebrations ending is better because you're seeing that this small group of Rebels managed to strike a decisive blow against a galaxy wide Empire. Maybe it wasn't the whole thing, but it was still a major blow to the organization. Now, learning that the First Order exists, it becomes a little more bittersweet, knowing that they did make a difference, but they must have constant vigilance or this type of evil can rise again.

I just wish we we could get the original OT on Bluray so I could actually enjoy both versions again.

I generally liked the CGI they added to Cloud City, but this shot always looked bad to me, like too 90's CGI green screen. It's just so flat looking.

I've always loved the expanded celebrations and the new music cue, it really works as a grand epilogue for the 6-part saga...but now it just seems kinda pointless in light of the ongoing saga. And this kinda speaks as to why shit shouldn't be messed with in general, as in one decade it works and the next it's relegated to just another superfluous change.

Which made sense because the Empire still had control of those planets and they didn't magically disappear because Vader and the Emperor were dead.
Yeah, even if one focuses exclusively on the on-screen canon of the UOT Tarkin's bit about local governors taking direct control of their systems after the dissolution of the Senate leaves the door open for some version of the Empire retaining some levels of control over some areas of the galaxy.

I'm kind of in the same place. Even in the theater I was never personally all that crazy about the touchy feely family portrait ending but I totally understood it. I didn't particularly like it but it was a completely reasonable way to end a trilogy.

And similarly, expanding the scope of that victory lap was one of the more reasonable changes.

When I say the celebrations always seemed premature I'm not knocking the celebrations themselves. It was never an inappropriate way to end the trilogy (or later, the saga).

My point, rather, is that the celebratory feel at the end of Jedi isn't inconsistent with or undercut by the subsequent rise of the New Order.

I'm not in the camp that thinks TFA somehow demeans or ignores the ultimate resolution of the OT/Saga.

Sure, TFA doesn't change the ultimate outcome of the 6-part saga which is the rise and fall of Big Daddy Vader. But it certainly makes the expanded galaxy-wide celebrations seem nothing if not premature.

A certain terrorist outfit was all over the world when it's high profile leader was killed by Seal Team Six on May 2, 2011. I seem to recall quite a bit of world wide celebration. But I digress....I'm a fan of all things Star Wars period. Good and not as good.
Just like most things in life that don't always go 100%/A+/top-of-the-line, I've learned to compromise and accept the not as good with the good.
Thankfully, for me, with Star Wars there's a whole lotta good over the not so good.

Right, and to bring this full circle, they've always seemed premature to me.

Exactly. It looks like a cartoon. And, thus, looks like a clash of style not to mention being anachronistic for 1983.

But the original ending isn't nearly so egregious as all the other jazz in light of the continuation of the saga. I've read the Thrawn books etc so it's not like I've just sat there with this idyllic notion of the lickle teddy bears' picnic being the final say for Star Wars, but those specific characters have come through and won the day so they (and indeed the audience) deserve that little soirée at the end, it's never struck me as premature when thinking of the wider post-ROTJ world. And sure, when the sequel trilogy really was just fan fiction it was easier to accept the bigger, grander ending as being fine for what it was, but now it feels like a much bigger misstep to me.

The Star Wars Special Editions: the gift that just keeps on giving.

I feel sorry for the poor Clone Farmers on Kamino...and the Termite weirdos on Geonosis...they all lost their jobs. And the Banking Clan and Neimodians and the Robot Union Local Office #267.

If it was Jar Jar he would have slipped, fallen off the building, banged his head on a few balconies before bouncing off an awning into the crowd startling somebody who backed into somebody else who lurched into a statue that toppled another statue that toppled another statue that toppled the statue of Palpatine.

'If you're just talking about The Holy Trilogy, then the Yub Nub ending is perfect as it's our small group of friends celebrating with a new ally.'

Good point, it probably does work a bit better if you are strictly an OT fan and disregard the rest of the movies. I'm way too much of a SW geek though so I guess I like the multiple celebrations as it does seem to broaden the scope a bit.

I've always said, if fans finally get the OT released Disney should take a note from GL's book with the SE. Give all the movies another pass.

My guess is as long as the fans who have wanted the Theatrical cuts for so long get what they want, they wont mind even more changes and fixes. The SE still needs work.
