Here's a CNN article on the character from 1999.

On a totally unrelated note, the badness of TLJ did kind of make me go back and embrace the time in my life when I actually enjoyed the franchise...well, I mean, I still do, but as far as it's present state is concerned, nah.

Anyway, what I mean by that is that I splurged on a lot of Star Wars merch, including some of those big Marvel Omnibus books that collect every issue of the original comic as well as stuff from other magazines at the time. Including the Droids & Ewoks ones - funny thing, I saw both the Ewoks cartoon and both of the TV movies before I ever saw a single "proper" Star Wars movie. Which might explain why I'm willing to forgive a lot to those little furry bastards.

Also is anybody else bothered by the fact that the individual steelbooks all have a villain's face on the cover except for Episode II, which has Yoda for some reason instead of Count Dooku?
I'll always like Jar Jar, I was the age he was targeted towards when the movie came out and even today, I can watch TPM and get a laugh out of some of his antics. As for the Steelbooks -- people said at the time that they chose characters based on who they'd have to pay residuals to for using their likenesses, but that doesn't really hold water since Ray Park and Ian McDiarmid are on TPM and ROTJ. I figure they could've at least used Jango Fett with his helmet on, and that also would've meant not having to green up the poster on the back.

I guess that makes sense. Ian McDarmid and Ray Park are wearing heavy amounts of makeup so for all we know the covers could be using CGI renditions instead of photos (neither looks like something edited out of a publicity photo, that's for sure), so they could get around having to pay royalties that way. Count Dooku in the other hand is pretty much just Christopher Lee.

The original quote was "media backlash" and some outlets have changed it to "fan backlash" or just "backlash". The publications at the time certainly lead the charge against the character. Sure, some fans disliked Jar Jar, but what was their outlet? YouTube, Twitter and Facebook gained prominence in the mid-2000s. If Ahmed was getting slammed on social media it was on message boards I doubt he would have seen.

It was the media attacking him that was the biggest problem, they poured fuel on the flames and now they've all developed amnesia to continue clickbait articles per the "Fandom Menace" movement.

Nobody ever deserves to be personally targeted because they play a character on film, television or whatever. It's despicable. Leave them alone to live their lives.

Jar Jar was always a Marmite character, but Ahmed looked like a gifted physical actor in the behind the scenes footage. He's done nothing wrong.

What’s the point in attacking Best? Criticize George for creating the character if you hate Jar Jar. The same people who attacked Best would’ve taken the role too if they were being paid.

For what it's worth, Best did essentially co-create the character. The voice for example was his idea.

Picked this up from a friend of my brother for $10 the other day. Watched the Prequels and while Attack Of The Clones is still dodgy (the Yoda/Dooku fight is the best thing in the three films) I found that The Phantom Menace and Revenge Of The Sith have grown on me a bit. I actually found them better than The Last Jedi.

The changes to the OT are still worse than being kicked in the balls.

You probably don't have the same nostalgia for Phantom as I do (I was 11 when it came out, pure target age for ~90% of the merchandising) but I will agree that it grows on you. Once you get past the "I waited that long for THIS?" phase that is. Time will tell with the Disney stuff.

Exactly. Come back in 20 years and see how many people talk fondly about TLJ.

I will. As I have said many times in this thread and other Star Wars threads I probably have most of the world beat for the number of times I have watched all of these films and I have dissected all of them many times. With the said there is plenty in TLJ that is reminiscent of the original Star Wars films just like TFA. Yes, I do have a few minor quibbles with these new films, but for every fault I find at least two or three positives.

In the other hand, people might remember the controversy better than the movie itself.

I don't know about you guys, but I can't wait until episodes 7,8and 9 come out.

They should be great. Had and Luke on screen together again, going on crazy adventures trying to stop some powerful new threatening menace that the Emperor had as a contingency plan... It'll be amazing!

The “original” trilogy was enough for me, since the other movies blow. Although I’d be happier if they were actually “original” and didn’t come with these new sh*t edits.

I never cared about any Star Wars movies all too much when growing up, but The Force Awakens and Last Jedi were the first ones that I felt emotionally hooked to on first viewing. And I think TLJ is probably the first one that I personally see as a legitimately good movie and not just a "good star wars movie."

AND I don't think anyone in twenty years will give any sh* about the controversies of The Last Jedi, let alone have it overshadow the movie, if they weren't a member of any subreddits at the time or were actively repelled by adult men who use phrases like "sjw" or "mary sue". (Strike twenty years from now, I think that applies today.)

This really shows how far cinema has hit bottom. I've heard some similar comments from my nephews. The twilight generation..... Momma jokes, green titty milk, and pointless characters.

Maybe part of the difference is that Star Wars never had much influence in my love of movies. It wasn't that I didn't see them during more formative years. It's just that I was bored by them because I didn't feel personally engaged by the stories or their heroes. And I don't mean that as a value judgment in any way to people who felt otherwise.

And yeah, forms of art/expression always feel like they're going downhill when the new stuff doesn't capture you like the then-new-stuff captured you when you were little. And the nephews of today are lacking in refinement because they're more captured by the new stuff of today more than what you liked when you were their age.

It would also be incredibly silly to label people who are fans of Empire or Return of the Jedi as fans or enablers of every terrible movie from the early 80's. Porky's generation.

Perhaps but today's generation can't even hold conversations outside of emojiis and their phones. I wasn't attacking you but more like generally stating how far expectations and what's considered good cinema has moved. Btw, porkys is what being a young person was like b4 all the nanny-pc-lawsuit culture took over.

And so, it seems to spin back around to this being much more a generational thing than any unbiased judgment in quality.
