I still call the first film Star Wars. All the posters and artwork had the text of the words “Star Wars” much bigger than “A New Hope” while the posters for the sequels had “Star Wars” much smaller than their episode titles.

Are you sure? I could have sworn it was 1979 when it was re-titled. It was re-issued that year to whet the audience's appetite for the next film which George Lucas had already called Episode V.

The film was originally released as—and consequently often called—Star Wars, without Episode IV or the subtitle A New Hope. The 1980 sequel, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, featured the episode number and subtitle in the opening crawl. When the original film was re-released on April 10, 1981, Episode IV: A New Hope was added above the original opening crawl

Thanks. As I said, I could have sworn that I saw it in '79 with the changed title. But there you go; when you're old enough to have seen the film back in the seventies, your memory is bound to play tricks on you

To my understanding it was retitled Episode IV A New Hope in 1981 to be more congruent with Empire Strikes Back which had been released with a title and episode #.

I will never... ever... as long as I live... call that first 1977 movie "A New Hope". In fact, in all my STAR WARS posts on all these five hundred STAR WARS-centric threads, THIS was the probably first time I've ever typed the words "A New Hope".

It may've been retitled that in 1979 or 1981, but no one... absolutely NO ONE that I ever encountered in my real life... called it "A New Hope" until around 1997 when the Special Editions hit.
