It was retitled A New Hope in 1981.

It was actually retitled as "STAR WARS - EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE"

I still call the first film Star Wars. All the posters and artwork had the text of the words “Star Wars” much bigger than “A New Hope” while the posters for the sequels had “Star Wars” much smaller than their episode titles.

Are you sure? I could have sworn it was 1979 when it was re-titled. It was re-issued that year to whet the audience's appetite for the next film which George Lucas had already called Episode V.

Call it Gone With The Wind or Jaws if you want. But the name of the film is A New Hope.

Quote:
The film was originally released as—and consequently often called—Star Wars, without Episode IV or the subtitle A New Hope. The 1980 sequel, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, featured the episode number and subtitle in the opening crawl. When the original film was re-released on April 10, 1981, Episode IV: A New Hope was added above the original opening crawl

To my understanding it was retitled Episode IV A New Hope in 1981 to be more congruent with Empire Strikes Back which had been released with a title and episode #.

Is it indeed? So you're copying your behaviour from me, then. I suppose I should feel flattered. If not slavish imitation, then presumably you're carrying on the way you do because of some perceived slight I may have commited against you. Is that what it is? Aw, diddums. Get over it and yourself.

I just tried to think of anyone that would personify manners here. Can’t really think of anyone. Maybe Earnest? Lol

The film is "Star Wars." Period.

"Star Wars" won six competitive Academy Awards at the 50th Academy Awards. "A New Hope" won jack shit.

Yes, it's just that I'd always remembered the change happening before and not after. Ah well, we live and learn.

I merely pointed out you were wrong. If I wanted to imitate you I would’ve replied with a sarcastic condescending comment.

I will never... ever... as long as I live... call that first 1977 movie "A New Hope". In fact, in all my STAR WARS posts on all these five hundred STAR WARS-centric threads, THIS was the probably first time I've ever typed the words "A New Hope".

It may've been retitled that in 1979 or 1981, but no one... absolutely NO ONE that I ever encountered in my real life... called it "A New Hope" until around 1997 when the Special Editions hit.

Ah, so you have felt slighted by something I've said. Presumably to you or perhaps you're taking on the burden of others whom you think I've offended. Either way, you need to let it go.
