Dear god, I'm glad I wrote these movies off years ago. Now with even more changes. Looks like I may never watch any pre-Disney Star Wars ever again, unless by some miracle they decide to release the theatricals some day.
It's all very Orwellian, now that it's available via streaming. George (or whoever.... Kathleen, some homeless dude down the street, etc) can make changes at any time they like, hit upload and VOILA, nothing that existed prior ever truly existed at all. We swear; that's the same cut you watched last week! Last edited by TM2-Megatron; 11-12-2019 at 11:10 PM. |

As far as episodes 4 thru 6 are concerned you can find the theatrical versions on VHS, laserdisc and the 2004 "limited edition" DVDs, though the best versions are actually the various true HD fan edits you can easily download for free.

Also, you can watch the pre-Disney Star Wars without any alterations. And you should. Seek and ye shall find. |

I suspect you're right, although at this point part of me hopes they make minor alternations to the Han/Greedo scene every year. 'cuz, really, why the hell not at this point? And you can already buy "Maclunkey" t-shirts, of course. |

I posted this over in the Movies thread, but here are my thoughts on the 4K Disney+ presentations:
I've sampled Episodes 1-7 plus Rogue One in 4K. Episodes 1-6 don't look great. The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith look very much like the Blu-rays. Basically, that's as good as it'll get with these movies due to the original production methods/early digital technology. The Phantom Menace is still a smeary mess. Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith fair better but digital artifacts abound. To my eyes, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi look to be from newer scans than the 2004 DVDs/2011 Blu-rays, probably done around 2012 for the planned 3D releases. Only problem is they share a lot of the same problems as the old masters, just without much of the messy encoding/digital artifacts. Colors are the biggest improvement. These look closer to how they originally did - or rather they don't appear to have the blue and pink color casts from the SE and previous DVD/Blu-ray releases. Unfortunately, it looks like another job from Lowry/Reliance or whatever they call themselves. Moderate DNR, edge enhancement, frozen grain. Close ups look pretty solid, if not a bit soft. But anything wider and you start to see the issues. It's not dissimilar to the Terminator 2 UHD, only they remembered to overlay some texture this time around. Basically, a huge disappointment. I guess there's really no hope that the 4K discs will be much better. The Force Awakens and Rogue One look okay to me. Grain looks a bit chunky and they don't really pop. But hopefully this is better with the 4K physical disc encode. |

From what I can tell from my spot-checking, sadly the answer is no on both counts. Both look better than the Blu-Ray transfers due to the resolution-boost and Dolby Vision grading, but it looks like they were transferred from the same masters used for the Blu-Rays.

I absolutely LOVE the convenience of digital. I love that I’ll be able to access Star Wars anywhere that there’s a good enough signal... but at the same time, I don’t like the idea of not actually owning something I like. The two formats go hand in hand very well though ![]() |

I feel like I’m the only person who cares about the alien subtitles not being preserved with their original font. I wouldn’t watch the SE’s anyway, but that alone makes all the films unwatchable in 4K for me. They should be hardcoded to the video. The generic subtitles are jarring and call attention to the fact that you’re watching a stream.
Out of all the saga films, The Last Jedi is the only one I can watch via its official release. And even with that I opt for the blu-ray over the 4K since the grade on the latter makes the star-field look greyish black. My preferred versions: PT - schorman’s HDTV preservations. OT - the 35mm scans. TFA - Adywan’s IMAX recreation that splices in the open matte footage of the Escape from Jakku sequence . And even if I didn’t care about that, the 4K version on Disney+ has those generic subtitles. |
