quite a disappointing post

  • all related information was 'entirely based on viewing' not 'telling'
  • why not go 'see for yourself' - then post?

So you see a 8k Samsung display at BB and talk to a BB salesman, then proclaim that he knows more then forum posters here, and 8k content will emerge much quicker then you could imagine.

How do you expect people to react?

why react? (i just passed on information - that 'simply was my experience')

does 'everyone' have to ...........................?
  • the display (represented itself)
  • the employee (definitely knowledgeable, especially 'on point' on everything 'he said')
  • the employee; know more? (that's not what i said - rather, that his information regarding 8K was 'on point' and accurate as i perceive it - no, this is not generally so on the forums, which characteristically are a 'battlefield' of 'conflicting information', so he 'definitely impressed' - unusually so and deserves proper recognition for his abilities - especially as he is 'not typical' for Best Buy)
  • unusual? (yes - which is why i mentioned it)
  • Best Buy (one of few - remarkable experiences)
  • what do i expect? (simply - that 'anyone so inclined' - go to Best Buy and 'judge for yourself')
  • 'nothing more' and 'nothing less' (certainly not these posts)
  • lastly - intent was to encourage anyone with an opportunity to go to Best Buy and 'judge for themselves' as the opportunity to do so is available and 'then' respond accordingly - if at all - make sense (does to me)?
  • and, 'both of these posts' seem 'irresponsible and unnecessary' to me (childish behavior)

Personally I haven't even thought about 8K, and I'm not going to.
There is!

You can watch 8K videos on YouTube for now!

Regardless, 8K is a niche market. It will never become mainstream.

Exactly, 8k content will come. 8K movies from hollywood its so unlikely in the current paradigm/trajectory of home video! Unless a quantum shift in technology, like the forecast automation wave we are headed for. But at that point everybodies western world will be changed forever so the idea of 8K movies at that point will be but one aspect that would have broken through barriers currently in place.

My question is how big of a TV would you have to get to benefit from 8K 200' minimum. Joe Kane says you practically have to sit on top of a 4K set to take advantage of the resolution, so would this mean you would have to have your nose on the glass to notice 8K resolution.

What also sucks for people with projectors even 1080p Blu-rays should have been anamorphically enhanced 4K they should have done anamorphically enhanced video here's to hoping when 8K come that it will be anamorphically enhanced.

This really should be asked in the 8K Discussion Thread.

The OP asked if there ever would be 8K movies, this would start up the silly size vs distance discussion, which assumes that people can't see better then 20/20 at best which we discussed in that thread.

I see you and others going bonkers for all this amazing AI that's heading our way, but I still don't get how it makes 8K movies a regular thing along with everything else that's going to "transform" our lives? Especially when it comes to stuff shot on film, as there will never be any substitute for the human factor of physically locating vaulted materials and then scanning them in, one reel at a time. AI could make the cleanup of dirt and scratches more expeditious and less error-prone, yes, but colour timing is also something that will continue to require the human touch.

But when this kind of anamorphic enhancement doesn't even apply to theatrical masters then why would they provide it for a home version?

8K is a joke, and nothing but a money grab, that only a fool would buy into it. The early adopters have already ran to Best Buy and bought one, just to say they have a 8K TV, with no content to play on it, while the retailers are laughing because they've got another sucker. It pays to always want to have the latest and the greatest, and try to impress other people.

If one is a front section of rows at the theater type and wants that level of immersion at home, they would need 8K res for that. 4K is not enough.

Default 8K? Of Course...

Well, we have 4K, so why should anyone be surprised by 8K? Did anyone actually believe manufacturers would stop there? Furthermore, should anyone be surprised when it is a given that something to be named will supersede 8K?

Technology and/or practicality has nothing to do with the above, as the overwhelming number of consumers don’t make rational decisions, they make emotional ones.

8K is clearly better than 4K. Even a child could answer that question, as 8 is greater than 4.

The fly in the ointment for some is that there is unlikely to be 8K discs. The flip on the fly is greater bandwidth at a lower cost combined with improved compression codecs and on board AI image and sound processing will deliver superior image/sound over presently available technology.

At least, that’s what the industry is betting on.

The other big question will be the affordability/availability of the highest tier products, including first run theatrical releases for the home, and whether or not they will remain an affordable luxury for all, or only in developed markets/major urban areas with the supporting infrastructure.

Also, going solely by a chart like this attached, 4K res maxed out for a 75er would be right at 5 feet distance and for that viewing angle as seen midway back in a commercial theater, that is more like 3 1/4 feet back from a 75" screen. Well beyond 4K's resolution limitations. The only limiting factor is not human eye but source content.

Though it seems like every site calculates this different and some even say that for 20/20, one would need more than 8K to max out the viewing angle of a theatrical seating distance.

This is where they get you! Just because it's 8K, doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to see a significant and a discernable difference vs 4K. It's what a person can see with a naked eye. Besides it really doesn't matter anyway because, there is no native 8K content nor movies to demonstrate it, so how anybody say it's better. Some people can't even tell the difference between standard Blu-ray and 4K.

Most likely a new media format would be no earlier than 2026.
