Like it or not, if you put your name on a product that may be somewhat faulty you automatically bear at least some responsibility for it. How many everyday consumers are going to be knowledgeable about the whims of the "rights holders?" KINO gets a lot of flack when releases turn out even a little problematic and few people blame the rights holders, yet Criterion gets a free pass with contextual excuses every time.

Lynch/Oz was certainly interesting, but the whole time watching it knowing it was a Janus film (this was pre-Contemporary line) I couldn’t help but feel it would be better as a supplement on a future Lynch release instead of a standalone disc.

Yasujiro Ozu would have been 100 years old on December 12th and I've noticed him recently being featured on the Criterion channel. Here's hoping we'll see Criterion commemorating this with a new physical release this year.

Agreed.Definitely felt like YouTuber quality essays - not atrocious but surface and shallow.

I thought it was a better exploration of the impact of TWoO than it was of anything to do with Lynch specifically.

Also worth noting Lynch/Oz is filled entirely with subjective opinions and suppositions (most of them very dry and academic ) based on nothing more than the fact Lynch is a fan of the film. I thought it was rubbish, but John Waters' segment is pretty good. Probably the only thing worth watching it for.

So this makes five Edward Yang films that Janus has rights to, preceded by Yi Yi, A Brighter Summer Day, and Taipei Story.

I wonder if they'll get The Terrorizers and the rest of his films.

Went to Japan Town in SF yesterday and saw a ton of films have the rights to that don't have DVD's (well some do) or Blu-rays in bootleg form. One was Bandits Vs Samurai Squadron which I remember Criterion was showing off theatrically maybe in 2008 or 2009? I remember being so excited that a DVD of it must be incoming, but now it's 2024 and still nothing at all. I'll take any Hideo Gosha from anyone at this point.

That Waters section is a real treat.

Also just realized this can’t be a supplement because it’s a scholarly perspective which Lynch doesn’t alllow.

It’s rare I feel completely satisfied watching something at home having not been able to see it in the cinema, but Lynch/Oz is essentially just a clip show (same with My Name is Alfred Hitchcock) and I feel like I lost nothing watching it on a TV, though if I could ever watch all of Lynch’s films in a cinema (I have with Oz) I would jump at the chance.

Lynch/Oz is my first hard-pass of the announced Janus Contemporaries titles. Oh well, they can't all be winners

I was thinking about Criterion releases that are hidden gems that you never hear discussed, specifically thinking about Patriotism. I then thought about the dvd era and how cheap it was to throw something on a disc back then. Now people want brand new scans that look pristine. I feel in doing so we are missing out on getting updates to releases that are a few decades old at this point for what we have now. Those decades old discs are mainly forgotten about.

I wanted to highlight some old Criterions that will probably never get an upgrade. I would also like everyone else’s takes and releases that would fit the criteria. I leaving out a lot of Japanese films because of the vocal few who talk about them. I know there are others can think of, but this is just off the top of my head.

Patriotism by Yukio Mishima
Eisenstein: The Sound Years
The Testament of Dr Mabuse
Unfaithfully Yours
The Monsters and Madmen box
The Firemen’s Ball
Loves of a Blonde
Divorce Italian Style

Pure speculation, but this would make sense, even more so since Warner didn’t release the film on 4K last year for the 40th anniversary.

And Captain Blood. I believe if Criterion wasn't sitting on this, WAC would have released it years ago...

These had 4k resto's that looked pretty great on their Arrow and Second Run releases. The fact that Arrow Academy's 2015 release of Firemen's Ball still hasn't sold out on Amz UK is indicative of what the sales potential is for these releases. Maybe that's one of the reasons?
