This year, I imported "The Pianist", and now it's coming out in the US, and I imported Abel Ferrara's "Siberia", and now it, too, is coming out in the US. I just need to learn that good things come to those who wait.

On the other hand, I've got a slew of imports I bought years ago that have never seen US releases. You just never know.
Happened with me. I bought Secrets & Lies and Irma Vep. Only to have Criterions that actually seem to rival or improve.

I had the issue with Crash only for me to import the German 4K, and then had to import the Arrow 4K. I think about getting the Criterion. But it’s certainly a low priority.

I got the German blu ray Mediabook from DiabolikDVD, and like the very next month, Criterion announced it. I got the Criterion, also.

The German mediabook is super cheap

There’s an international release of Siberia?

Buster Scruggs might not happen:

I would happen to see Mank as though the reviews are divisive and a lot of people have issue with Kael’s Raising Kane ascribing Mankiewicz authorship too, but I never got to see it in the cinema because of COVID and with the black and white cinematography it would be nice, especially with Criterion’s Welles connections. GeekGab seems to think it’s happening but you really can’t trust him.

Seems far more likely that Fincher, given his history of extremely elaborate DVD and Blu-ray editions, would be happy to participate in a Criterion than the extras-shy Coens.

It’s less likely as it’s a Netflix series but if Fincher could get a Mindhunter Criterion set out there I wouldn’t object

Is Lars von Trier's Element of Crime upgrade to blu-ray going to happen this year? I'm ready to buy the dvd, but I'll wait if its coming.

Criterion's logic here was just so strange. I know it is only one of the three parts of the movie, but 43 minutes is still long enough for a feature film. Yet they encoded it like an extra. I didn't even know I owned this film until months after finishing all the other Fellini-directed movies in the collection, because I'm not used to digging through special features. I rarely watch them.
Yikes, that's fairly dire. How do they make a transfer that's worse than a disc released more than 10 years ago?

I hope this means they are releasing a Hara box set. Second Run had hinted that there was more Hara in the future from them, but I’d rather pick up the domestic Criterion release. The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On is a fantastic documentary/film.

Melville made 13 films.

Criterion has six of them:

Le silence de la mer
Les enfants terribles *
Le deuxième souffle *
Le samouraï
L'armée des ombres
Le cercle rouge

* DVD-only so far, and listed as "Currently Unavailable", but not "Out of Print".

Kino Lorber has four of them:

Bob le flambeur
Léon Morin, prêtre
Le doulos
Un flic

Cohen has one of them:

Deux hommes dans Manhattan

Yet to be released in the US:

Quand tu liras cette lettre
L'aîné des Ferchaux

For all labels, the announcements come when they come. Some I will be interested in, some I won't. On occasion, there might be a month's slate where I want all of them; rarely, there might be a slate where I don't want any of them (though I don't recall this ever being the case with Criterion).

I don't worry about it. I have plenty of other things to get tied up into knots about.

Unless you have prepaid for a subscription like Vinegar Syndrome has, I don't understand being disappointed by any label's announcements. If they put out something I want, I buy it, if they don't have anything I want, I don't. It's not worth hyping yourself up without really knowing anything beforehand and then getting upset because there's nothing to spend your money on.

Not to sound like Dr Phil, but what kind of personal enjoyment do you guys get when purchasing Criterion titles? Anybody here living vicariously through Criterion? I guess the real question is: Why do we buy Criterion titles?
